This is very special. The so-called "conventional mere name" is manifest knowledge. No Tathagata considers the conventional to be a mere name. Moreover, the sutra says: "All these are mere names, they only abide in distinctions, the functions of speech are different, the meaning of what is said is not real." Regarding this, those who think that the speaker is real in itself, and that the meaning of what is said is different from the speaker, in order to refute this view, it is shown that the speaker and the meaning of what is said only abide in distinctions. Here, "distinction" is discrimination, only the nature of discrimination, manifested by the sound of "name" as its function of speech. The meaning that appears to the ear consciousness is not the speaker, because it is not the speaker itself. Even if it is only so, everything will not appear as various forms of form, etc., and the aggregates, etc., cannot be established. Just as many illusory people observe and establish the common characteristics of the sound of "person" and "person", so it is with things that are empty of nature in the ultimate sense. To falsely posit as a speakable nature in the ultimate sense is merely conventional, because it has transcended all elaboration. As briefly stated in the sutra: "Son of the gods, if in the ultimate sense, the ultimate truth becomes the nature of the objects of body, speech, and mind, then it does not belong to the number of truths, it is only the conventional truth. However, in the ultimate sense, the ultimate truth transcends all expressions." Or, the momentariness of all things is conventional. The nature of the movement of things, that is, the nature of emptiness, which is the nature of all things that are like illusions and dreams, is the ultimate truth. Moreover, whether the Tathagatas appear or not, they always abide, therefore they are permanent. If the conventional is valid, why is it conventional? If it is not valid, how can selflessness be established from it? This is unreasonable, because in this way, how can the knowledge of inference enter into grasping the conventional with false general characteristics?

Although its essence is that which enables the attainment of the desired object, and is therefore considered a valid means of cognition, similarly, some conventional truths, although their own nature is false, are considered valid means of cognition because they come from a lineage of causes such as proper hearing and thinking, and therefore do not deceive in matters of the world and beyond. The opposite of this is not a valid means of cognition. All these establishments of valid means of cognition and so on are merely nominal, as has been established in the Commentary on Valid Cognition and so on, so this is certain. All conventional truths have also been proven to be merely not the nature of reality. Therefore, the appropriation of these conventional truths such as wood should only be something that is in accordance with oneself and has not become real from the beginning. Consciousness and so on, which have become real, do not exist, because they are contradictory to it. Therefore, if one does not investigate, then the imputations made on the appearances of arising, abiding, ceasing, and so on, such as illusions, dreams, Gandharva cities, transformations, and so on, are established as conventional truths. Whatever is not imputed, but is completely ascertained by a valid means of cognition, such as non-arising, is the truth of the ultimate truth. As it is said in the Collection of True Dharmas: Non-arising is true. Arising and other dharmas are not true, they are false and have the nature of deception. This non-arising is also called ultimate because it is in accordance with the ultimate, but it is not actually real, because in reality the ultimate is beyond all elaboration. Only non-arising is Suchness, and although that is not to be shown in any way, by the power of convention, it is shown as unconditioned by the nature of all conditioned phenomena. It is also shown that arising and non-arising exist at all times, therefore they are unconditioned. But that is not the essence of both, because it is the characteristic of being beyond all essences. As it is said in the Sutra of Generating Great Joy: Not understood from others, it is peaceful, Not elaborated by elaborations, Non-conceptual, not diverse, This is the nature of Suchness.
