The establishment of what is called "consciousness" is such that consciousness and the object of consciousness are established in mutual dependence. Consciousness is of six kinds: eye consciousness, ear consciousness, nose consciousness, tongue consciousness, body consciousness, and mind consciousness. If it is said that consciousness arises in dependence, just as when faculties, objects, and attention gather, and also in dependence on appearance, then, just as with eye consciousness and so forth, names are applied based solely on uncommon causes, just as with the sound of a drum and a barley sprout. It is said that the faculty to be placed is transformed by benefits and harms, because it follows after clarity and attachment. Having gathered and closely summarized the various forms, continuities, aspects, behaviors, and objects of the sense objects, there are five aggregates: form is that which has the characteristic of being able to be ruined; feeling is the nature of experiencing; perception is apprehending characteristics; formation is manifest action; and individually cognizing objects is the nature of consciousness. Thus, their individual characteristics are spoken of. The twelve sources are: eye, ear, nose, tongue, body, form, sound, smell, taste, and tangible objects. These ten have already been mentioned, and now the sources of mind and phenomena will be explained. Among these, the mind source is the seven things, that is, the six consciousnesses and the mind faculty. Among these six consciousnesses, whichever consciousness has just ceased, it can manifest and produce a result similar to it. Therefore, in order to strongly establish the sixth basis of the state of the seed of consciousness that arises after it, it is established that it is not the case that it becomes different like the eye and other faculties. Feeling, perception, formation, and aggregates are the phenomena source. Non-revealing form, space, and cessation by discrimination and non-discrimination are also included. These seven phenomena are the phenomena source, according to the Vaibhashikas. Among these, non-revealing form has already been analyzed. Which phenomenon does not obstruct other phenomena?

That which is not obscured by others, is unobscured and provides opportunity. Because things are very clear during this period, it is a clear intermediate state, which is the sky, but because it has become matter, it is unclear and without joy. The distinction obtained through the wisdom of the noble ones is cessation through distinction. For example, the realm of nirvana with remainder, which is just the aggregates liberated from the bonds of affliction. The other non-discriminating cessation is when causes and conditions are not complete. For example, the realm of nirvana without remainder, which is characterized by the complete severance of the bonds of the aggregates. These three are also said to be unconditioned dharmas that exist substantially. The mere absence of material substance is the sky. The mere absence of affliction is cessation through discrimination. The mere absence of aggregates is cessation through non-discrimination, like a candle being extinguished, but it is not substantially existent, so say the Sautrantikas, who conceive of this as non-dharma. Here, the unconditioned is neither dharma nor non-dharma, but is just like conditioned dharma. Suchness is also called unconditioned here, because all dharmas are unborn from the beginning. That suchness is the limit of dharma, and is distinguishable and completely pure, and is also called cessation through discrimination and cessation through non-discrimination. The twelve sense bases are the meaning of the gates of arising of consciousness. The mind base is divided into seven aspects, and then called the eighteen elements. From the eye element, the form element, and the eye consciousness element, to the mind element, the dharma element, and the mind consciousness element, and so on, the eighteen are explained by the distinctions of the six faculties, the six objects, and the six consciousnesses, which are called elements because of the meaning of holding their own characteristics. If you ask which of these eighteen elements are fully associated with desire, the answer is all of them. If you ask which are fully associated with form, the answer is fourteen, excluding smell, taste, and nose consciousness, and tongue consciousness. If you ask which are fully associated with the formless, the answer is the last three.
