Furthermore, because they flow from the wounds of the six sources, these cause outflows, or cause the continuum to abide in objects, therefore they are outflows. There are four rivers, namely, apart from the views among them, the outflows of desire, existence, and ignorance are merely the three rivers of desire, existence, and ignorance. The views of the three realms are the river of views, the fourth. Because they carry, they are rivers, that is, they carry those who are associated with them, that is, for the sake of practicing according to them. Bonds are merely the four rivers, that is, because they completely bind various sufferings and cause association, or repeatedly connect and bind objects, therefore they are bonds. Clinging are four, namely, the bond of desire together with ignorance is the clinging to desire, and the bond of views, that is, the clinging to views other than moral discipline and asceticism, and moral discipline and asceticism, and the bond of existence with the addition of ignorance, associated with dullness and excitement, is the clinging to the assertion of self. Why is moral discipline and asceticism removed from the views? Because it is an enemy of the path, and because it deceives both directions, that is, because householders are deceived by this, thinking that not eating, etc., is the path. Monastics also, because they go by abandoning the objects of desire and realizing purity. Because of clinging to desire, etc., they are clingings. Knots are four, and are only the desire realm, namely, ignorance, malice, moral discipline and asceticism, and the actual clinging to the belief that this is true. Ignorance itself is the knot of the body, that is, in order to cause those who have obtained various forms of desire not to abandon them. Similarly, the rest should be inferred. Obscurations are five, namely, longing for desire, malice, dullness and sleep, excitement and regret, and doubt. Only the desire realm is obscuration, because it is extremely unwholesome. Because it obscures the aspect of virtue, it is an obscuration. Sleep and dullness are said to be one obscuration, and excitement and regret are two.

What is the reason for their sameness? Because their food, non-food, and function are the same. The common food of sleep and drowsiness is five things: dullness, displeasure, laziness, not knowing the measure of food, and discouragement. Non-food is the attention to light. The function is also the same, because both cause discouragement. The food of agitation and regret is four things: the conceptualization of relatives, the conceptualization of places, the conceptualization of immortality, and recalling things that were previously laughed at, played with, and enjoyed. Non-food is calm abiding. The function is also the same, because both cause the mind to enter into non-peace. If all afflictions are said to be obscurations, then why are only five mentioned? Because they harm the aggregates and cause doubt. Because desire and hatred harm the aggregate of ethics, sleep and drowsiness harm the aggregate of wisdom, and agitation and regret harm the aggregate of concentration. If concentration and wisdom are lacking, then doubt will arise about the truths, therefore it is said to be five. Knowledges are twelve, namely suffering, origin, cessation, path, exhaustion, non-arising, dharma, accordance, the minds of others, conventional, familiarity, and knowing according to sound. Forbearances are eight, namely forbearance of the dharma of suffering, and so forth. The formations that are concordant with mind have been explained. Now, the formations that are not concordant with mind will be explained, which are acknowledged in a contradictory way, such as: obtaining and not obtaining, the meditative absorption of non-perception, the meditative absorption of cessation, non-perception, the life faculty, similarity, object, separate obtaining of aggregates, object of sense bases, birth, aging, abiding, impermanence, collection of names, collection of sentences, collection of letters, aggregation and non-aggregation. Among these, obtaining is to find and be fully endowed with. It has two aspects: not obtaining and obtaining after losing, and obtaining and being fully endowed with. The opposite of this is not obtaining. Obtaining and not obtaining.
