The fourth, having obtained certainty, is to completely suppress arising, and the fifth is to be separated from arising. By the power of reliance, one cannot be overwhelmed by the fear of sinful karma, as it truly causes the doer to experience undesirable results. The power of reliance, for the time being, is solely taking refuge in the Three Jewels. As it is said in the "Tale of the Pig Woman," the son of the Thirty-Three Gods, subject to the law of death, was born in the womb of a pig woman. Seeing the manifestation of the karmic result he was about to experience, he became frightened. Until he heard the voice of Indra, he took refuge in the Three Jewels, thereby completely eradicating that karma. After that, he died and was reborn in Tushita. Not abandoning the mind of enlightenment is also the power of reliance. The mind of enlightenment has two aspects: the difference between the aspirational mind of enlightenment and the engaging mind of enlightenment. The engaging mind of enlightenment also has two distinctions: conventional and ultimate, which will be explained later. Among them, an example of relying on the aspirational mind to completely eliminate karmic obscurations is: A friend's son wanted to go to another place, and his mother, out of love, grabbed his feet to dissuade him. The son, with intense anger, kicked his mother's head and boarded a ship, until the ship sank, and on the edge of the ocean there was a temporary hell. At this time, he heard a voice from the sky saying, "Because this person has been disrespectful to his mother, his karma is exhausted. Stay here, this wheel will circle your head." Then he strongly aspired, "Whoever in this world has been disrespectful to their mother, is doing disrespectful things, or will do disrespectful things, may their karma be ripened by me alone! May no one suffer such a painful situation!" Like this, the karma that was originally to be experienced in this life was completely exhausted, and the wheel also remained in place. Afterwards, he heard a voice saying, "Go, your karma has been completely exhausted by the power of aspiration alone." Like that. The metaphor for the engaging mind is special conviction, that is, the qualities of the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas...

For all beings, especially those who believe in the inherent purity of their nature, and the selflessness of all phenomena, they generate the mind of enlightenment by focusing on enlightenment and sentient beings. Thus, this mind is the antidote to grasping at reality, and with it as the root, it becomes the antidote to all phenomena, in order to realize the true meaning as it is. Therefore, generating this mind purifies all karmic obscurations. As it is said: If a Bodhisattva commits a transgression in the morning, if he manifests the mind of enlightenment at noon, then his aggregate of morality should be known as limitless. Similarly, son of good family, the mind of enlightenment, which is like the fire at the end of an eon, burns all misdeeds, and so on extensively. Similarly, in the liberation of the noble Maitreya, it says, son of good family, just as a lamp is placed in any house or dwelling, as soon as it is placed, it dispels and illuminates the darkness accumulated for a thousand years. Similarly, when a lamp of the mind of enlightenment is generated for the sake of all-knowing wisdom, if it enters any dense place in the minds of sentient beings that is full of the darkness of ignorance, as soon as it enters, it dispels the darkness of karmic and afflictive obscurations accumulated for countless hundreds of thousands of eons, and truly generates the light of wisdom. So it is said. In the Noble Jewel Heap Sutra, it is also said: Light Protector, for example, in caves and other places, after hundreds of thousands of years have passed, if someone lights a sesame oil lamp, would that darkness accumulated for hundreds of thousands of years say: I will not leave from here? World Honored One, no, because when a sesame oil lamp is lit, it does not have the power not to leave, it will surely disappear. The World Honored One taught: Light Protector, similarly, the hundreds of thousands of eons of accumulated karma and afflictions can also be eliminated by one individual wisdom that properly attends to them. So it is said. If one enters the mind of enlightenment, then there is no doubt that all transgressions will be purified. Thus, the Tathagata's Secret.
