Too little food makes the body weak, and naturally one will not feel joy. Too much food leads to indulgence in the five faults such as sleep, making the body unable to function properly. Thus, both situations make the body unable to function properly; without these, one is in harmony with virtue. As an antidote to the harm caused by lack of diligence, one should not sleep in the early and late parts of the night, but rather engage in yoga. As an antidote to the harm caused by regret, one should abide in mindfulness. The virtue that arises from meditation is the virtue of equipoise, that is, the nature of equipoise and the merit that accompanies it, which is called meditation. Why? Because it tames the mind. Thus, the virtue of equipoise, like flowers to sesame seeds, always deeply tames the mind with qualities and makes it its nature. In short, the virtue that arises from meditation is the worldly path and the path beyond the world. Among these, the worldly path is the various meditations and the formless realms. These and all others should be understood through defilement, purification, establishment, and cleansing. What is defilement? It is the four unstated roots: desire, views, pride, and ignorance. Desire is defiled by experiencing the taste of pleasure, because it experiences the taste of intensely conditioning pleasure. Views are defiled by meditation that is predominantly views, because it relies on meditation to generate various views such as speculation about the past. Pride is defiled by meditation that is predominantly pride, because one becomes arrogant and complacent by recognizing its excellence. Ignorance is defiled by meditation that is predominantly doubt, because one does not recognize suchness, desires liberation, and especially doubts whether realization is liberation or not. What is purification? Pure meditations and other worldly phenomena, for the sake of virtue, are free from all entangling stains, and are therefore called purification. What is establishment? It is the first dhyana with five branches.

These are the distinctions of virtue and so forth. If asked, what is purity like? It is said that from the first dhyana of infinite extent to the realm of neither perception nor non-perception, this is called purity. The path that transcends the world is the path of seeing and the path of meditation. The samadhi that is in accordance with the two paths is also the same, that is, from the first dhyana to the realm of nothingness. The realm of neither perception nor non-perception is the world itself, because the extremely clear perception is extremely scattered. Therefore, the Blessed One said: "As long as there is absorption of perception, so long as one can realize all knowledge." If asked, what is the meaning of "object of meritorious action"? This third one, how is it that it is both merit and object, therefore it is an object of meritorious action. Briefly speaking, the object of meritorious action arising from generosity, the actions of body and speech, all three of these can be transformed, it is both merit and action, and it is also an object of meritorious action. The mind that arouses them is both merit and action. The dharmas that arise simultaneously with it are only merit. The actions of body and speech are only objects. What arises from discipline is only the action of body and speech, so it can be transformed into three types. From what arises from meditation, love and compassion are both merit and objects of action, because through the door of love and compassion, one can manifest and attend to the mind that is in accordance with it. Alternatively, doing merit is meritorious action, that is, combining with merit. These are its objects, that is, for the sake of accomplishing these, one diligently engages in combining with merit. Thus, the distinction of virtue and so forth is established. This is mostly taught in common with other individuals. The distinctions of Bodhisattvas should also be extensively explained. Among them, generosity is divided into three types: material, fearlessness, and dharma. Among them, material generosity is the complete giving away of oneself. Giving unsuitable things such as alcohol, poison, and weapons is prohibited.
