The difference of suffering, for example, some people build gardens for the sake of the Three Jewels, or for the sake of the Sangha of monks from the four directions, and also build temples in that garden, and donate bedding and cushions in the temple, and similarly, determine to hold feasts, and similarly, give to those who come and go there, and similarly, give to the sick and those who care for the sick, and similarly, in places that are cold and frozen and threatened by wind and rain, prepare food or porridge or noodles and drinks, and then offer them to the Sangha, so that the noble ones may not have their bodies wet, and their robes not soaked, and may fully enjoy them and attain happiness. Those also, with that basis, use the little meaning and little activity for listening, and also for thinking and meditating. If a son or daughter of a lineage is fully endowed with these seven objects of merit arising from material, then whether walking, staying, sleeping or not sleeping, merit will always constantly increase, like this. By "giving has been given" and "should be given," one should understand giving and the object of giving. Here, due to the difference of conditions, there is a difference of suffering, that is, eliminating the difference of suffering of the recipient, thereby making the fruit of the giver become special. This is an example arising from material, and in some places, it is also exemplified by a field with qualities. Similarly, it is also exemplified by the difference of mind, and here it is also the previous example. From the difference of benefiting itself, it is like parents and others benefiting others. From the difference of qualities, giving to those who possess discipline, the ripening result increases a hundred thousand times, and so on, like this. If a place of merit with qualities becomes a field, then giving to it will produce great fruit. That field with qualities is the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha, or a special individual. If the field is the same, then in which of the two should one know the karma that possesses power? From the object, that is, objects such as jewels, silver, and gold become rich and numerous.

Therefore, fully grasping the excellence of the object of giving generates powerful karma, while the other does not. From the excellence of the object of giving arises the excellence of the result, for example, if perfect color is given, the body becomes splendid; if perfect fragrance is given, fame spreads in all directions like fragrance, thus possessing fame; if perfect taste is given, it becomes as delightful as a delicious taste; if perfect touch is given, one becomes very young and tender, and like a precious woman, touching the limbs at the right time brings comfort. If the object of giving and the field are the same, then which of these two has the more powerful karma? It is the one who gives with attention, that is, with strong joy and strong attention. Giving with faith brings perfection in all necessities. Giving with respect brings perfection in honor and wealth. Giving with one's own hands brings perfection in the desire for vast wealth. Giving at the right time brings timely acquisition of perfect enjoyment. Giving without harm brings perfection in the unobstructed acquisition of enjoyment. If these two are the same, then which has the more powerful karma? It is the intention, that is, the intention of liberation from suffering, and dedicating it to all sentient beings, and giving generously, holding this intention is to be known as a powerful karma. The other is not, that is, giving generously for the sake of heavenly reward or enjoyment is like doing business, giving for the sake of results is to be condemned, because the purpose is to acquire. So, this is also giving generously with the intention of liberation from suffering, and this is also dedicating it to all sentient beings. If the previously mentioned aspects are the same, then how should it be understood which of these two has the more powerful karma? It is understood from grasping something other than that, that other thing is that other than giving is discipline, that is, whose giving is upheld by discipline. So, the giving of others is also upheld by discipline, and the giving of this person is also upheld by discipline, these also immediately...
