Now, for the sake of repeatedly turning into goodness, it is merit. Or, in order to lead beings into purity, it is merit. That is also the virtue that is perfectly associated with the body and so on. What is giving? Whoever gives, that is giving. Giving for the sake of competition, fame, desire, fear, hope, and reliance is not giving. So, what is giving? It is for the purpose of offering and benefiting, that is, giving with the thought of offering to those who are completely liberated from suffering, and for other beings, it is giving in order to benefit the great source of the senses, that is, for what purpose it is said to be given. Also, with what does one give? With the actions of body and speech that are aroused by the gathering of mind and so on, this is the characteristic of giving. As it is said: When a person himself, with his own possessions, gives with a virtuous mind, at that moment, the heap of virtue is called giving. As it is said. The main thing is that the mind itself is giving. What is said is: The mind that abandons one's own possessions and makes them the possessions of others is giving. What is the fruit of the merit arising from giving? Dedicating all beings to liberation from suffering is the fruit of liberation, and great enjoyment through the fruit. The fruit, that is, great enjoyment, is because it has vast, abundant, and continuous fruits. Therefore, it is a name that is in accordance with the meaning, giving is in order to eliminate the suffering of poverty of the giver and the receiver. The undifferentiated fruit of giving is great enjoyment, and its difference is also caused by eight causes, namely, field, object, attention, thought, and other than that, complete holding, support, increase, and many people. Among them, the field is the excellence of beings, suffering, benefit itself, and virtues. Regarding the excellence of beings, the Blessed One said: Giving to those who are reborn as animals, one should expect a hundredfold maturation. For those who are reborn as humans who have broken their vows, it is a thousandfold. Suffering
