And the characteristics and signs should be kept in mind. Regarding this, all these dharmas are neither existent nor non-existent, this is the nature of space. Because it does not admit being different or not different. Formless, invisible, unimpeded, these are the characteristics of space, because it has the same dharma nature as it. For example, no characteristic is one characteristic, this is the sign of space, because the signs of emptiness like space appear separately. For the eight liberations, one also enters into samadhi. As the Blessed One said: 'One with form contemplates forms', this is the first liberation. 'Not having the thought of internal form, one contemplates external forms', this is the second liberation. 'It is beautiful', this is the third liberation. These three, because through these one is liberated from obscurations, therefore they are the antidote to overcoming the obscuration of transformation, therefore they are liberations. Among them, the first is the impure, and the third is the pure. Some yogis, in desire, in order to counteract attachment to the color of what is used, etc., enter into samadhi with internal sound, etc., as the object of focus, and immediately after that, with external transformations, etc., as the object of focus, enter into the first dhyana, or in order to counteract attachment to the color of the first dhyana realm, etc., enter into the second dhyana, that is, it should be said 'One with form contemplates forms'. Because internal form, etc., is the object of focus, it is said 'one with form', because external form is the object of focus, it is said 'contemplates forms', meaning that by means of conviction, transformations are seen with the mind. Some people only with the internal path as the object of focus, with external transformations, etc., as the object of focus, enter into the first or second dhyana as before, that is, it should be said 'Not having the thought of internal form, one contemplates external forms'. Similarly, by meditating on the impure, in order to make the mind stream not wither and be joyful, if one holds the agreeable form as pure, whether attachment to color, etc., will arise or not, by observing through experience, that is, focusing on the agreeable form.

Dwelling in the fourth dhyana, one emanates forms that are both repulsive and non-repulsive. Having attained a perception of sameness in these, one cultivates a belief in repulsiveness for the sake of abandoning effort and non-conformity in due order, so it is said. Thus, these are the liberations related to form. The five formless ones, from the liberation of the sphere of infinite space to the liberation of the cessation of perception and feeling. Among these, the four formless states, such as the sphere of infinite space, are liberations because they are the antidotes to the obscurations of those who are pure, who taste their flavor. They are also referred to as peaceful abodes. The cessation of perception and feeling is an abode that is in accordance with liberation, having transcended by relying on the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception. Prior to arising from that, the mind and mental factors are all extinguished, it is an abode of supreme and utter peace. For the sake of abandoning its obscurations, these are the liberations. The fourth dhyana and the four formless states, as well as the cessation of perception and feeling, are called the nine successive meditative absorptions. These nine are gathered into the meaning of the supramundane path, because the absorption of cessation is what is to be attained by it, it is the noble one. One also dwells in the eight spheres of mastery. Because of mastering the object, they are the spheres of mastery, those whose minds abide are the spheres of mastery, namely these eight. Among these, two are manifestly accomplished from the first liberation, and two from the two, and four from the third. Thus, the Blessed One also said: "Perceiving form internally, one sees external small forms, mastering them, one knows and sees, and one also perceives in this way." This is the first. "Thus, the great ones," this is the second. "Perceiving no form internally, one sees external small forms, those, etc.," this is the third. "Thus, the great ones," this is the fourth. "Perceiving no form internally, one sees external.
