, because things and desires are not focused upon, therefore being separated from desires. Separated from the non-virtuous actions of body, speech, and mind, which have afflicted desires as their cause. Having both investigation and analysis is the antidote to desire, because having investigation and analysis, and the meaning of desire is accomplished, and body and mind are extremely tamed, thereby experiencing the samadhi that has joy and bliss. The second is because seeing that investigation and analysis are faults that disturb the mind, therefore turning the mind away from them, thereby entering into samadhi, thereby abandoning everything with all of them, because there is no investigation and no analysis, thereby having inner extreme clarity. The third is equanimity, like investigation and analysis, because joy is also coarse, therefore practicing equanimity, and having mindfulness and awareness. In order not to open the opportunity for joy, therefore increasing their wisdom, and the physical body and the mental body's speech and sensations are combined with happiness and extremely tamed happiness, thereby having happiness. The fourth is neither happiness nor suffering, because suffering and pleasantness and unpleasantness have previously been abandoned. The fourth dhyana is also happiness. Equanimity and mindfulness are completely purified, because they have attained extreme purification here. Among them, the first dhyana has five branches, investigation and analysis are the antidote branches, because they abandon thinking in the manner of desire and hatred and harm. Joy and bliss are the benefit branches. One-pointedness of mind is the support branch of both of them, because relying on the power of samadhi, virtuous thinking and so on arise. The second dhyana has four branches, inner extreme clarity is the branch of both of them, and the remaining branches are the same as before. The third dhyana has five branches, equanimity and mindfulness and awareness are the antidote branches. Happiness is the benefit branch. The support branch is the same as before. The fourth dhyana has four branches, equanimity completely purified and mindfulness completely purified are the antidote branches.

What is it? The feeling that is neither suffering nor happiness is a branch of benefit. The branch of support is the same as before. By meditating on the first dhyana, one is born in the same quantity and share as the gods of the Brahma realm up to the Great Brahma. By the second dhyana, one is born in the same quantity and share as the gods of clear light. By the third dhyana, one is born in the same quantity and share as the gods of virtue. By the fourth dhyana, one is born in the same quantity and share as the gods of great fruit. Above that, only the noble ones are born in the pure abodes. The four formless realms are only the formless realms themselves. In that, one is free from attachment to the perception of forms such as blue and yellow, and the perception of obscurations such as walls and fences, and the perception of various things such as palaces and gardens, mountains and rivers, and the moon and the sun. By meditating on the perception of space in all places, since all those appearances do not appear in any way, it is said that space is infinite. Thus, here, by focusing on the sphere of infinite space, one dwells having perfected the sphere of infinite space. With what consciousness does one believe in infinite space, with that same consciousness one believes in infinity, and by eliminating the perception of space in all places, it is the sphere of infinite consciousness. By going further up from the sphere of infinite consciousness, one does not see any object of focus, what is called nothingness, is the sphere of nothingness. By making that very nothingness the object of focus, one enters into the samadhi of the sphere of nothingness. By the very nothingness itself, one is also free from attachment to perception, and one also eliminates that perception. Since one has truly accomplished the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception, therefore the perception of nothingness has already been eliminated, therefore there is no perception. Subtle perception is only entering into samadhi, not liberation. Having entered into the samadhi of the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception, one experiences it. These formless realms do not have the establishment of branches, because they are of one taste in peaceful abiding. Thus, these eight are the dhyanas and the formless realms themselves. The Bodhisattva enters into samadhi in each of them day by day. Before and after entering into samadhi, there is also the aspect of space.
