It is thought to be like a defeat. Due to attachment to gain and respect, praising oneself and denigrating others, being stingy and not giving wealth or Dharma to the suffering and helpless, not accepting others' confessions, angrily beating others, abandoning the Mahayana, and proclaiming something that resembles the true Dharma. How is it not contradictory as it is said? It is not contradictory, because according to the differences between medium, small, and great individuals, there are classifications of five, eight, and four types of transgressions. The transgressions of one person are also the transgressions of others. As it is said in that very place: If kings and other Bodhisattvas, what is the remainder of their transgressions for other trees? If they are not those who hold vows, then how are these transgressions established? How are those who hold vows also tainted by these faults? This fault does not exist. For whomever something occurs frequently, it is added to them, that is, it is held and proclaimed by their own name, for the sake of generating fear. Everyone should completely abandon all transgressions mutually. Those who have not properly taken the great naturally negative actions will also become unqualified, therefore those who hold vows are even more serious. If that is the case, then would each one become seventeen transgressions? It is not like that, because the four mentioned in the Vinaya Pitaka include the others within them. Thus, the second of the five is included in abandoning the Mahayana, and the Mahayana also teaches the vehicles of the Hearers and Solitary Buddhas, abandoning it is also abandoning them. The third and fourth are beating. Holding wrong views is proclaiming something that resembles the true Dharma. Saying there is no cause is abandoning the next world, that is, entering after taking the ten non-virtuous actions, and also causing other beings to take the ten non-virtuous actions. Thus it is said. Destroying towns and so on is beating. The first of the eight is abandoning the Mahayana, not training the mind leads to abandoning emptiness. As it is said: There are also other bad knowledges.

Therefore. The foolish, possessing the arrogance of the wise, abandoning such self-destroyers, will fall face down into the Avici Hell. Thus it is said. By the very cause of abandoning them, the teacher will also abandon them. The second is, by showing what appears to be similar to the true Dharma, outside the practice of the six perfections, viewing the vehicles of the Hearers and Solitary Buddhas as if they were the true Dharma. The third, fourth, fifth, and sixth are because of self-praise and disparagement of others, the Great Vehicle is the self-realization of the Bodhisattva. Stealing the property of the Three Jewels, stealing the monastic robes, creating division in the Sangha, and the seventh is because of miserliness and attachment not giving wealth. Thus, extremely intense miserliness and attachment, even the enjoyment of that object by others is unbearable, but instead, they seize, separate, prevent giving, and even take back what has been given. Preventing the practice of tranquility is because of extreme miserliness towards the Dharma of realization, one does not show it to others, and also prevents others from transmitting it separately. One should give to those in meditation, preventing giving to those who recite, is because of miserliness towards wealth, sometimes because miserliness arises towards certain people themselves. Abandoning the mind of enlightenment is because of abandoning the Great Vehicle, the mind of enlightenment is the Great Vehicle, and abandoning it is abandoning the Great Vehicle. These four downfalls, namely self-praise and disparagement of others, etc., each form a pair, totaling eight. These distinctions have been explained in detail as mentioned before. There are many distinctions, which should be understood by oneself. Others: If asked, how should it be explained that in the Akasagarbha Sutra, many other root downfalls are mentioned? Answer: What is said is true, but they are not the cause of destroying the vows of those who have taken the vows purely. If asked: Why? Answer: Those who have not taken the vows purely, they are the cause of cutting off the previously created roots of virtue, and the perfect happiness of gods and humans, therefore there is no contradiction, so it is said. Here, Bodhisattvas, due to extreme attachment to gain and respect, give rise to the root downfall of self-praise and disparagement of others. Heretics
