If establishing a self that is different from others, then it is because the reason lacks pervasion, and also because the property to be established in the example is not established. Through the way of pervasion or the way of contradiction, other well-combined proofs that I have made are common refutations, so there is no need to refute them separately. Therefore, since there is no valid cognition that establishes it in this way, it is not appropriate to apply the name "this self exists." When the means of harm has been made the path, I see that the time has come to apply only the name "this does not exist." If the self exists, then it is either the nature of cognition or not cognition, because otherwise it would also become that. It is not even by way of the well-combined aggregate of causes being the agent in a self-sufficient manner, because that is not reasonable for matter. It is only by mere presumption that the body and so forth can be the agent, because the knowledge that "I know" appears. For the permanent and pervasive, there is no such thing as change, and that which is without change is not a cause, and that which is not a cause is not an agent, therefore, the statement that "the self is matter and possesses knowledge, therefore it is a knower" is a borrowed ornament. This also refutes the agent of this's virtuous and non-virtuous actions and the enjoyer of its results, because it is not reasonable for ignorance and so forth and for that which has no distinction. The connection with knowledge is also non-existent because there is no other connection. For the self that is the nature of cognition, both of those are impossible, because there is no difference from that one, so action and enjoyment would become one, and cause and effect are contradictory to that. If they are different, then it would also follow that the enjoyer and the agent are lost, because there are no different ones from the nature of the object, action, and enjoyment, and even if there are no different ones, then just like the nature of matter, the self has no action and enjoyment. Furthermore, those who say that the self is permanent and pervasive assert that, and if that is visible, then it cannot be permanent and pervasive, because if it is its nature, then it is only

If it is indeed manifest, then since it is associated with the previous and subsequent other worlds, and has a body that exists in all places, it would necessarily be attached to the nature of being associated with all things. If one were to be attached in this way, then one would also be attached to other worlds and so on. If it is said that I am manifest only through my own nature, but not through permanence and pervasiveness, therefore there is no such fault. Then, are its permanence and pervasiveness not the nature of this? If it is said that those are other dharmas, so it is like that. If that is the case, then this is permanent and pervasive. If it is said that because it is associated with those, it is like that. Then, how is one's own nature, which is not permanent and pervasive, and is the same as a vase and so on, associated with those? If it is said that it is through association itself, then I am neither permanent nor impermanent, neither pervasive nor non-pervasive. If one thinks like this, then at that time it has no nature at all, therefore it will become without self-nature, because for things that have nature, there is no state other than the two states that exist mutually exclusively. For things that have no nature, like a lotus in the sky, it is also unreasonable to be associated with permanence and so on. It is only that it has nature, but in itself, it is not the object of names such as permanence, because names are all reasons associated with dharmas that have become other meanings. If it is said that there are no names such as permanence, then is its own nature pervasive in all times and places, or is it not? If it is the first case, even if one does not cling to different dharmas, one must cling to the nature itself that is being clung to, therefore the fault will not disappear. If it is the latter case, then just like a vase and so on, it itself is not suitable as its subject. Therefore, for the self that can appear, permanence and pervasiveness themselves are impossible. Even if it is unmanifest, for it, those two are impossible, if it is permanent, then the nature of this that is associated with happiness, is also associated with suffering, then it will be associated with happiness and suffering at the same time. Its nature of having the body of other worlds, is also the nature of having the body of this world, therefore at the same time having the bodies of two worlds and
