If the person himself is the knower, then he must also possess forms and so on, because he knows "I am the white-clad one, I walk." If this is a reversed knowledge, then why not say "I am the enlightened one"? If you say it is because there is no harm, then what harm is there here? For the white-clad one, there is no thought of "I am not the white-clad one," or for the walker, there is no generation of the knowledge of "I am not the walker." As just stated, because there is no harm, it is not established that one understands oneself as the knower. Therefore, it is not appropriate for the person to be a knower as a material object. Even so, according to those who assert this, forms and sounds and so on cannot be directly realized by one knower. This is also not established, because there is no valid means of proof for the statement that "forms and sounds are known by one knower." In this way, this meaning is not established by direct perception, because what arises from the mind and the external sense powers do not engage in it. What arises from the mind is not the perception of form or sound, and the external sense powers are not the self. This refutes the assertion that "the knowledge of forms and sounds is directly known as being on the same basis," because if forms and sounds are not apprehended, it is not possible to recognize the connection with those minds. It is also not by inference, because there is no sign. In the second view, it is also not established, like this: if it is not the nature of matter, then form and so on must be regarded as only the nature of consciousness. If they are different, then the selflessness of their nature must also necessarily be different. Therefore, it is not known how form and so on are directly perceived by one knower. If they are not different from one self, then mutual difference is also abandoned. If there is no contradiction because of some kind of difference, then the nature of the self, by which it is different from consciousness, is only matter; and by which it is not different, it is consciousness. Therefore, it is not established that something that is not matter is directly perceived as an object. Therefore, whether the self exists or not, the knower of forms and so on that appear simultaneously

A single (consciousness) cannot directly prove it. Because this also eliminates those things that do not appear simultaneously, because the reasoning is common. Thus, it should be understood that those who assert self have the seed of their realization of self eradicated. Because, according to those who assert self, things that appear simultaneously and can be apprehended by different sense faculties, and those things that do not appear simultaneously, are said to be seen by another observer. And this oneness is not deceived by valid cognition, and it is not a material observer, therefore, there is no basis for clinging to self. Some say that by directly knowing "I knew before, now I personally perceive," one realizes a knower related to the previous and later knowledge, and that is the self, and this harms those who assert no-self. As it is said, "Such a person of such form, is the cognition of the nature of recognition, is realization, this harms no-self." What is said is also clear, because matter is not suitable as a knower, and if the non-material knower is different, then there will be no non-different, because recognition is confused, so it is not direct perception. Furthermore, "I knew before" refers to the memory of the previous knower, and "now I know" refers to the grasping of the present, then who grasps the knower related to the previous and later times? Even if this cognition is allowed to be one, it is not direct perception, because the object is not near. Direct perception grasps the existing object that is cut off in its own time, not the one that is completely limited by other times. The existing object that is completely limited by other times cannot be seen at other times, otherwise, the previous cognition would also grasp the present existence. Even so, recognition will not become valid cognition, because it is grasping what has already been grasped. With the distinction of object, time, etc., that is also the occasion of valid cognition. The present existence is not realized by the previous wisdom. If you think so, then is the present existence also different, and the previous existence also different? If you say yes, then your words of self-awareness transcend the object.
