If it is not constant, and if it has a cause, then it must be stated what the cause of those things is. If it is said that one's own habitual tendencies are fully matured, then even without the delusion of fire, etc., the delusion of burning, etc., will occur. If it is said that only the delusion of fire, etc., is the cause of the delusion of burning, etc., then the appearance of being awake will also become established as true even though it has no function, because even mere delusion establishes the certainty of cause and effect. According to the one who says that the appearance of being awake is true, and says that the appearance of the state of dreaming is not true, the pleasure of meeting a woman in a dream will not become the consequence of following after waking up and producing semen. That pleasure is not produced from meeting a woman, but rather from the difference in the state of mind. Then, how can the pleasure produced by meeting a woman while awake arise when there is no such object of focus? If it arises, then it would be a fault of exceeding having a cause. Therefore, there is no difference between being awake and sleeping. That is enough. Furthermore, you have inferred that from the meaningless appearance of consciousness, the determination of objects, etc., is unreasonable. To that, we say this: Just as the appearance of sleep, although meaningless, has the determination of objects, etc., so it is also the same when awake. Then, here, when awake, since the objects of focus are all true, what need is there to refute them? If there is no external object, then what is there? Separate from the apprehended and the apprehender, It exists as the meaning of the supreme consciousness. The consciousness liberated from the apprehended and the apprehender exists and possesses the supreme meaning, the nature without fabrication. Thus it is said: Because there is no apprehended and apprehender, The mind's experience has no other function. Its experience is not other, It is thus self-luminous. The Blessed One also said: Just as a child discriminates, External objects do not exist. The mind disturbed by habitual tendencies, Clearly appears as an object. Thus it was said. Some of them say this: All of this that appears as the nature of body and objects is consciousness.

That is it. Moreover, since it is self-awareness, nothing can be the grasped and the grasper. The nature of the grasped and the grasper is falsely established by conceptual thought. Therefore, the consciousness that is separate from the nature of the grasped and the grasper, which are universally imputed, is true, so they say. Another view is that, in the ultimate sense, consciousness is like pure crystal, unstained by all the defilements of conceptual thought. These appearances are merely manifested by the inverted ignorance, therefore, the so-called grasped is merely non-existent. Because it does not exist in any way, the grasper of consciousness is also non-existent, so they say. The ocean of Yogacara doctrines, those who have reached the other shore proclaim thus. The treatises of the Yogacara school of consciousness-only, which are profound and difficult to fathom, invaluable, are like the ocean, the source of jewels, and those who have reached the other shore proclaim thus. So, what is the view of the Madhyamikas? The wise consider that consciousness itself does not exist in the ultimate sense. The consciousness that the Yogacarins consider to exist in the ultimate sense, the wise, that is, the wise who are proficient in reasoning, do not consider it to exist in the ultimate sense. Why? Because it is separate from the nature of one and many, like a lotus in the sky. What is reasonable in its own nature is considered to be the ultimate truth, and it will become one or many. This consciousness is separate from one and many, therefore, it cannot be the ultimate truth, like a lotus in the sky. The reason is that whatever is separate from the nature of one and many does not exist in the ultimate sense, for example, a lotus in the sky. This consciousness is also separate from the nature of one and many, which is called pervasive non-establishment. This reason is not unestablished, if consciousness is with aspects, then like external objects, it will not have the nature of one and many, which is clear.

However, it exists. The harm-doer either is a single coarse entity or eliminates the nature of non-atomic particles. If this aspect that has become the nature of consciousness is also a single coarse entity, or if it is a multitude of distinct atoms, in either case, it is not possible to clearly refute the reproach of existing on the side of external objects. Because, if it were not so, it would not arise, the refuter is not possessed of the reason of being external to consciousness. To say that a harm-doer possessed of a bodily reason does not exist in the nature of consciousness, which is without a body, is also meaningless, because if it possesses an aspect, consciousness is also embodied. If this very aspect, which possesses a vast object, is the body, if this is external, it is called the body. If it is consciousness, then it is not, we have not understood this relationship between the name and the named up to this time. A refutation that does not touch the essence of a thing is not reasonable to engage in by name alone, and that which exists by nature is not reversed by name alone. One might think, for those who hold that consciousness possesses aspects, there is this fault; for those who hold that only the conceptualization that is separate from aspects is the case, how will this separation from the nature of one and many not become abiding on the path of non-establishment? This statement is that consciousness is the nature of clarity, and apart from the clarity of blue and so forth, there is no experience of clarity even in dreams. If blue and so forth are untrue, what else remains other than consciousness? If here, when blue and so forth appear, simultaneously there is experience of inner bliss and so forth, and if one denies that, then there is nothing whatsoever that is undeniable. Nor can it be said that the appearing blue itself is the nature of bliss and so forth, because the appearance does not appear as bliss itself. No one knows to say that this completely severed blue is bliss, or has become bliss, but the world regards bliss as the basis for clinging to self when there is bliss, and with the clinging that has preceded manifest perception.
