Mother! What are the virtuous dharmas that the Blessed One said lead to enlightenment? The dharmas that definitely lead to liberation are as follows: the thirty-seven factors of enlightenment. These are the four mindfulnesses, the four right abandonments, the four legs of miraculous power, the five faculties, the five powers, the seven branches of enlightenment, and the eightfold noble path. Because it is the nature of going to nirvana, it is the path that goes to the cessation of suffering. Furthermore, the characteristics of the truths are established in two ways: namely, general characteristics and individual characteristics. Among them, the general characteristics are: all are without self, and impermanence, and so on. The second is: suffering is impermanent, the origin is the cause, cessation is permanent, and the path is definitely liberating. Also, there are two kinds of individual characteristics: namely, non-straight characteristics and straight characteristics. Among them, the non-straight characteristics are: suffering is disease, fruit, pain, and so on. Origin is condition, arising, and source. Cessation is place and guidance, and so on. The path should be understood as a door, vehicle, ladder, medicine, and so on. The straight characteristic is: suffering is impermanent. Origin is the cause. Cessation is permanent. The path is definitely liberating. From which, the true nature of truth is thus directly grasped. Therefore, the straight characteristic, with the knowledge of realizing the truth, grasps the nature. Some say that cessation can also be seen as unborn. From which, there are two kinds of those who desire liberation: namely, fear of suffering and fear of affliction. Among them, the first is to understand that the antidote to the truth of suffering, cessation, is peaceful. Therefore, he sees cessation as permanent. The second is to know that the antidote to the truth of origin, cessation, is peaceful, and to see cessation as unborn. From which, with this straight characteristic, the truths are realized.

Therefore, if one desires liberation, one should cultivate straightforward patience. If, by distinguishing and establishing the Dharma, and by thoroughly applying mindfulness, can one directly realize the truth? Or is it by distinguishing and establishing characteristics? It should be said: it is by distinguishing and establishing characteristics. If that is the case, what should be done at the time of distinguishing and establishing the Dharma? It should be said: there are two types of beings to be tamed: those with dull faculties and those with sharp faculties. For those with dull faculties, the Dharma is taught in order to help them understand the distinction of characteristics without confusion and without being deluded. By grasping the distinction of the Dharma, one will easily grasp the distinction of characteristics, it should be understood. It is also to dispel fear of the statement that "all conditioned things are suffering." Even the intelligent become afraid of distinguishing characteristics, thinking, "How can I fully understand these conditioned things with just this much?" Similarly, upon hearing that "all conditioned things are the origin of suffering," one thinks, "How can I abandon just these conditioned things?" Therefore, the Dharma is taught to prevent those with dull faculties from being deluded and to prevent them from being afraid. Furthermore, it is said: The establishment of the Dharma for the inferior, is taught for the purpose of abandoning fear. So, from which gate should a yogi enter into the meaning of truth? It should be said: there are four gates for entering into the direct realization of truth, namely: the gate of aggregates, the gate of sources, the gate of elements, and the gate of name and form. Gate means the main thing. Some enter through the gate of dependent origination and from the mindfulness and so on. All Bodhisattvas also enter through the gate of dependent origination. The meaning of accumulation is aggregate, like a pile of rice. The meaning of the place of origin is source, like a gold mine. Source is the meaning of gate, like a craftsman's dwelling. The meaning of element is the meaning of nature, like the elements of earth and so on. Nature means one's own essence, and therefore, it causes it to deteriorate, so this is an element. One should revere or have compassion for sentient beings for the object to be experienced.
