Merely being controlled by ignorance, those who are completely obscured by happiness, develop attachment to encountering happiness, and develop attachment to not being separated from happiness. Similarly, those who are completely obscured by suffering, develop attachment to being separated from suffering, and develop attachment to not encountering suffering. Similarly, those who are completely obscured by the feeling of neither suffering nor happiness, develop attachment to existence (srid pa, Sanskrit: bhava, Romanized Sanskrit: bhava, literal meaning: existence). From this, various views and doubts arise. From this, actions are again performed. From this, life and suffering arise. Similarly, due to the continuum of the obscuration of ignorance, and the combination of attachment, sentient beings revolve like riding on a six-wheeled waterwheel, and samsara is without beginning. That is, hell beings experience the suffering of burning and cutting, etc., hungry ghosts experience the suffering of hunger and thirst, animals experience the suffering of stupidity, asuras experience the suffering of pride, humans experience the suffering of seeking, and gods experience the suffering of aging and death. From where do such afflictions arise? They arise from actions. From life arises suffering. From this, afflictions and actions arise again. Life constantly arises. Therefore, the main cause of samsara is afflictions. The seed of afflictions is latent tendencies. Without latent tendencies, actions and life will cease, and thus liberation from suffering will be attained. In order to eliminate latent tendencies, one should rely on the cause of eliminating latent tendencies, such as the senses, etc. In order to obtain the senses, etc., the method and order are as follows: First, one should purify the initial view. The Blessed One said: Although those with faith are like that, in order to abide in pure conduct, one should first purify oneself. Abiding in pure conduct, what is the initial thing? It is that discipline is completely pure and views are upright. Just as the lineage of a horse is shown by its racetrack, those who possess pure views and discipline, and thus approach the four truths, should cultivate the four kinds of patience. Again, that

From not being drowsy or asleep, seeking the exhaustion of karma's arising and ceasing, pure view and discipline, the first thing to rely on is patience. Thus it is said. Therefore, in order to examine the meaning of patience, the gateway to entering truth will be explained. Therein, truth is fourfold, namely: the truth of suffering, the truth of origination, the truth of cessation, and the truth of the path. Therein, the establishment of truth is twofold, namely: the establishment of dharma and the establishment of essence. Therein, that which is definitely different by the power of dharma is the establishment of dharma. Whatever establishment of essence is definite, that is the establishment of essence. Therein, the establishment of dharma is as follows: the five aggregates of clinging, which are tainted and associated with the three realms of craving, are suffering. The craving of the three realms is the origination of suffering. The non-existence of craving is the cessation of suffering. The eightfold noble path is the path. Furthermore, tainted with craving abandoned is suffering. The cause of this is craving alone. The cessation of craving and taint, and the eight limbs are the path to attain it. This is the establishment in terms of dharma. The establishment of essence is as follows: all conditioned phenomena, whether tainted or untainted, are established as suffering because of their impermanence. The meaning of suffering is the meaning of impermanence. As the Blessed One said: Monks, form is impermanent; whatever is impermanent is suffering. Likewise, feeling and so forth are also thus. Thus it is also said: Alas! Conditioned phenomena are impermanent, they are of the nature of arising and ceasing, they arise and then cease. Thus. Similarly, because it causes the arising of tainted actions, it is origination; the meaning of origination is the meaning of causing to arise. As the Blessed One said: What is dependent origination here? It is the cause itself here. All conditioned phenomena are without entering and without arising, that is cessation. As the Blessed One said: Where do name and form cease without remainder? Thus it is said. Everything is certainly the dharma of renunciation, in order to proceed to nirvana.
