That is, when an Arhat generates the thought, "I should refrain from all misconduct," eight types of undefiled precepts arise simultaneously with that thought. This does not occur during the day and night. Similarly, here, all actions of body and speech that are truly established, truly given, and especially practiced are undefiled. Because a Non-Returner is free from desire and attachment to the desire realm, the antidotes to misconduct included in the desire realm, and those included in the form realm that are not included by the body, and the antidotes to speech unrelated to language are all undefiled. Because of being free from attachment to the two realms, a Non-Returner is just like an Arhat. All subsequent actions of body and speech are also undefiled. Furthermore, it is said: "The noble one free from desire and attachment, the eight that refrain from all, the two born of the form realm are stainless, all in the form realm are also undefiled." It is said thus. What is the difference between the precepts of the path and the precepts of the antidote? It should be said: Knowing the Dharma of suffering, precepts arise from the power of abandonment and conformity. It is also momentary, so it will cease. Discriminating wisdom also arises temporarily in the same way, from the space of previous abandonment and the power of conformity. Knowing suffering accordingly, it arises from the cause of abandonment and the power of conformity. Some say: Whatever is Dharma-knowing, arises from the power of abandonment and the dominion of conformity. Similarly, the remainder and the grounds of meditation should be spoken of accordingly. The precepts of the antidote, like destroying afflictions, arise from the cause of actual abandonment and the power of previous abandonment, but not from others. In the boundaries of each abandonment, it is only from the power of previous abandonment. Thus, this is a brief explanation of the eight precepts that refrain from natural transgressions. The precepts that refrain from prescribed transgressions are also for monks, nuns, male and female novices, crow-scarers, laymen, and laywomen.

Those (bhikshunis) are born from truly taking and completely guarding the precepts established by the Buddha. Among them, all the precepts of a bhikshu, as stated in the Vinaya, are more than four hundred and twenty. Most of these precepts are the ethics that prevent transgressions of the established offenses. For all the precepts, if they do not arise immediately with a mind that has not taken a vow, then it should be explained in detail until they are not abandoned. Similarly, bhikshunis should also act accordingly. The fundamental precepts of male and female novices are nine, the (precepts) for scaring away crows are eight, and similarly, so are the (precepts) for those in close dwelling. The precepts of laymen and laywomen are always five. These also arise immediately with a mind that has truly taken them, and the moment of the mind truly increases, until they are not abandoned. Furthermore, whatever precepts are established by the bhikshu to prevent offenses, their number is only more than four hundred and twenty. The precepts of bhikshunis are different from these. The precepts of novices, fasting, and permanent lay practitioners are nine, eight, and five respectively. Offenses arise from the basis, from causes such as truly taking them. Thus it is said. Therefore, if all the non-afflictive ethics are summarized, they arise from twelve causes, namely: truly taking, causing to truly take, truly giving, practicing more, the root of the precepts not being interrupted, generating roots of virtue, abandoning the causes of misconduct, the power that accords with truth, the power of cultivation, the power of previous abandonment, completely understanding things, and arising from promises, it should be stated accordingly. As it is said, the wavering of these afflictive and non-afflictive ethics is of four types. Namely: wherever the limbs of ethics are abandoned, that is wavering, this is from the aspect of inconsistency; and vowing to do all misdeeds, this is complete wavering; and abandoning all ethics.
