What is the cause of difference? It should be said that the one who knows the path, that is, being liberated from afflictions, is called liberation. That same wisdom becomes the gate of nectar, hence it is called the gate of liberation. The three paths can eliminate twenty kinds of afflictions, such as: the root of non-virtue, desire, outflows, fetters, rivers, connections, clinging, going where one should not go, miserliness, obscurations, the basis of disputes, latent tendencies, worldly dharmas, pride, objects of affliction, non-virtue, complete connections, wrongness, perversion, and generating non-virtuous thoughts. Among these, the root of non-virtue has three aspects: attachment, hatred, and delusion. Among these, hatred is thinned by two paths, and completely eliminated by the path of non-returning. Attachment and ignorance are thinned by three paths, and completely eliminated by the path of an Arhat. Desire has three aspects: desire for sensual pleasures, desire for existence, and desire for pure conduct. Among these, the desire for pure conduct is completely eliminated by the path of the fruit of stream-entry. The desire for sensual pleasures is eliminated by the path of non-returning. The desire for existence is eliminated by the path of an Arhat. Outflows have four aspects: the outflow of desire, the outflow of existence, the outflow of views, and the outflow of ignorance. Among these, the outflow of views is eliminated by the path of the fruit of stream-entry. The outflow of desire is eliminated by the path of non-returning. The outflow of existence and the outflow of ignorance are eliminated by the path of an Arhat. Fetters have four aspects: the fetter of the aggregate of greed, the fetter of the aggregate of malice, the fetter of the aggregate of holding moral discipline and asceticism as supreme, and the fetter of the aggregate of manifestly clinging to this as true. Among these, the fetter of the aggregate of holding moral discipline and asceticism as supreme, and the fetter of the aggregate of manifestly clinging to this as true, are eliminated by the path of the fruit of stream-entry.
