By cultivating the contemplation of impurity to counteract attachment, one can generate tranquility and insight. There are nine types of attachment: attachment to form, attachment to beauty, attachment to the scent of sandalwood and other fragrances of the body, attachment to the beautiful ornaments and decorations of the body, attachment to the color of the body, attachment to the plumpness of the body, attachment to the gracefulness of the body and limbs, attachment to the beautiful and perfect teeth, and attachment to color and shape. Corresponding to these, the nine categories of contemplating impurity as an antidote to these attachments are as follows: like something completely abandoned, the perception of swelling; because the parts of the limbs are separated, the perception of disintegration; because the foul odor is the nature of pus, the perception of suppuration; like peeling off the skin, the perception of redness; because it is the nature of decay, the perception of putrefaction; the perception of a heap of impure things; because it is completely separated, the perception of dispersion; because it is the nature of bone, the perception of a skeleton; and the perception of burning. By cultivating these contemplations, one can make the afflictions rigid and perfect tranquility and insight. By examining and analyzing conceptualization, and by cultivating mindfulness of breathing as a preliminary, one can generate tranquility and insight. There are six aspects to mindfulness of breathing: counting, following, abiding, focusing, transforming, and purifying. Among these, inhalation is the breath that enters, and exhalation is the breath that goes out. Wisdom that focuses on these breaths is mindfulness of breathing. Counting means the number of body and mind, and the mind becomes focused on counting just by focusing on inhalation and exhalation. From one to ten. Like this, repeatedly. There are three faults here: incomplete counting, which is when one perceives two as one; excessive counting, which is when one perceives one as two; confusion, which is when one perceives inhalation as exhalation and exhalation as inhalation.
