Listening to the Dharma. Non-virtue arising from improper attention, which is engaging in misconduct with the body and engaging in misconduct with the mind. Non-virtue arising from what is done in front is that, relying on any class of deities whatsoever, one establishes places of offering that are preceded by harm or preceded by wrong views. Therein, one engages in the activity of offering, or where great assemblies of beings engage in non-meritorious activities. Therein, what is preceded by harm is where sheep, buffalo, and so forth are killed at the place of offering. What is preceded by wrong views is where those who seek merit and those who seek the supreme through fasting and so forth are afflicted. Non-virtue arising from engaging in strife is acting wrongly towards sentient beings with body, speech, and mind. Non-virtue arising from taking up is that, having engaged in misconduct with the body, speech, and mind, one takes up the desired result in the lower realms or higher realms, which is to project or to complete. In terms of the lower realms, it is a cause of projecting and a cause of completing. What completes in the higher realms is that when one is born as a human, one experiences poverty and so forth. Non-virtue arising from the opposing side is any dharma that is an opposing side to the antidote. Non-virtue arising from the wrong path is any dharma that becomes an obstacle to virtue, such as constantly gathering assemblies. The indeterminate arises from fourteen causes, namely: the indeterminate arising from nature, from relation, from subsequent relation, from intention, from ultimate meaning, from what is obtained by birth, from combination, from what is done in front, from subsequent clinging, from engaging closely, from taking up, from antidote, from the proximate four, and from similar cause. Among these, the indeterminate by nature is fourteen things. Namely: eye, ear, nose, tongue, body, smell, taste, tangible object, and mind together with all combinations.

Also, the life faculty, harmony, aggregates of names, aggregates of phrases, and aggregates of letters. If, by association, it is uncharacterized, then the aggregates of names, phrases, and letters of a mind that is neither hateful nor extremely pleased, are the minds and mental phenomena that are entirely grasped by that. 'A mind that is neither hateful nor extremely pleased' means that it shows the reversal from virtue and non-virtue. 'Grasped entirely by that' means that the aggregates of names, phrases, and letters are thoroughly engaged through the expression of the aspect of meaning by the mind. If, following association, it is uncharacterized, then the aggregates of names and so forth are the predispositions of manifestation. It is said that the predispositions of the mind of the aggregates of names and so forth thoroughly engage in manifestation later on. If, from arising, it is uncharacterized, then the actions of body and speech arise from the mind and mental phenomena entirely grasping those predispositions. The aggregates of names and so forth of a mind that is neither hateful nor extremely pleased are in the aspect of manifestation. If, from the ultimate, it is uncharacterized, then it is space and the cessation of individual analysis. If, from birth, it is uncharacterized, then it is the fully ripened state of non-virtuous and virtuous contaminated phenomena. If, from application, it is uncharacterized, then it is conduct that is not afflicted by mental afflictions and is not virtuous, or the place of crafts. 'Not afflicted by mental afflictions and not virtuous' means that when it is not afflicted and is also not virtuous, then conduct and so forth become uncharacterized, otherwise they become virtuous or non-virtuous, as appropriate. If, from what is done in front, it is uncharacterized, then those rely on any kind of deity and do it in front, abandoning harm and wrong views, thoroughly establishing a place of offering, and engaging in the work of offering to them, or where great assemblies of beings do not generate merit and non-merit. If, from following attachment, it is uncharacterized, then those servants and employees and workers, or sons and wives and so forth, with a mind that is neither hateful nor extremely pleased
