The eighth chapter, "Discernment of Kalpas," from "Discernment of Conditioned and Unconditioned," compiled by the great Pandit Ten Powers Glorious Spiritual Friend. This world of sentient beings is sometimes established through the aspect of aggregates, sometimes established through the aspect of sense bases, and sometimes through the aspect of elements. Among these, there are five aggregates, namely, the aggregate of form, the aggregate of feeling, the aggregate of perception, the aggregate of mental formations, and the aggregate of consciousness. It is called an aggregate because of its meaning of accumulation. Among these, form has three aspects: the form of the sense faculties, the form of the objects, and the form that is non-manifestative. Among these, the form of the sense faculties has five aspects: the eye faculty, the ear faculty, the nose faculty, the tongue faculty, and the body faculty. The form of the objects has five aspects: the object of form, the object of sound, the object of smell, the object of taste, and the object of touch. Among these, the object of form has two aspects: color and shape. There are four types of color: blue, yellow, red, and white. Further divisions will become more numerous. There are seven types of shape: short, long, square, round, high, low, and uneven. Furthermore, there are twenty types of form: four colors, eight shapes, cloud, smoke, dust, fog, shadow, and sunlight.

Light and darkness. Furthermore, form has three aspects: visible and obstructive form, and invisible and non-obstructive form. Among these, visible and obstructive form is one, namely, the form perceptible to humans. Invisible but obstructive forms are nine, namely, the five sense faculties such as the eye, and the four objects such as sound. Invisible and non-obstructive form is one, namely, non-manifesting form. Furthermore, form is of two kinds: the form of the great elements and the form derived from the great elements. Among these, the great elements are four: earth, water, fire, and wind. The four properties of earth are: the ability to exist, hardness, roughness, and the function of holding. The three properties of water are: wetness, smoothness, and the function of cohesion. The two properties of fire are: warmth and the function of ripening and drying. The three properties of wind are: lightness, movement, and the function of increasing and expanding. The form derived from the great elements has ten aspects: the five sense faculties and the five objects. Sound has two aspects: that which arises from the cause of the apprehended great elements and that which arises from the cause of the unapprehended great elements. Among these, the sound that arises from the cause of the apprehended great elements has two aspects: that which indicates sentient beings and that which does not indicate sentient beings. The sound that arises from the cause of the unapprehended great elements also has two aspects: that which indicates sentient beings and that which does not indicate sentient beings. Furthermore, each of these four sounds can be divided into pleasant and unpleasant, thus making eight kinds. Smell has three kinds: pleasant smell, unpleasant smell, and neutral smell. Taste has six kinds: sweet, sour, salty, spicy, bitter, and astringent. Touch has eleven aspects: earth, water, fire, wind, smoothness, roughness, heaviness, lightness, coolness,

Scorching, hunger, and thirst. Non-manifest form has three aspects: namely, form associated with vows, form associated with non-vows, and form associated with both vows and non-vows. The aggregate of feeling has two aspects: namely, feeling arising from the body and feeling arising from the mind. Among these, the five feelings arising from the body are as follows: feeling arising from the condition of contact through the gathering of the eye, feeling arising from the condition of contact through the gathering of the ear, feeling arising from the condition of contact through the gathering of the nose, feeling arising from the condition of contact through the gathering of the tongue, and feeling arising from the condition of contact through the gathering of the body. There is only one from the mind, namely, feeling arising from the condition of contact through the gathering of the mind. Thus, feelings become six. Furthermore, when these feelings are each divided into three aspects, they become eighteen. These are pleasure, pain, and neither pain nor pleasure. There are also five aspects: the faculty of pleasure, the faculty of pain, the faculty of joy, the faculty of sadness, and the faculty of equanimity. The aggregate of perception has six aspects: perception associated with eye consciousness, perception associated with ear consciousness, perception associated with nose consciousness, perception associated with tongue consciousness, perception associated with body consciousness, and perception associated with mind consciousness. When each of these is divided into three aspects, namely small, large, and immeasurable, they become eighteen. The aggregate of formations has two aspects: formations associated with the mind and formations not associated with the mind. Among these, the formations associated with the mind, in brief, are forty in number: namely, thought, contact, attention, desire, conviction, faith, diligence, mindfulness, samadhi, wisdom, and discrimination.
