The great protector of wealth ran to the Buddha. Because a friend killed his half-brother for money, with that karma, in Rajagriha, Devadatta threw a stone at the Buddha. Because he killed a boy with a short throwing stick, with that karma, blood flowed from the Blessed One's foot. In anger, he controlled the Tathagata, saying, "This one is only fit to eat barley," with that karma, in the village of Veranja, during the three months of the summer retreat, the Blessed One ate barley. Because he slandered the one named "Self-born Buddha Joy," with that karma, the Brahmin woman Chanchamana falsely slandered the Blessed One. Because he killed a prostitute and placed her ornaments in the king's place, with that karma, the Blessed One was slandered by Sundari. Because he overturned the begging bowl of the self-born Buddha who was going for alms, with that karma, in Shravasti, the Blessed One did not obtain food, and the bowl became empty. Because the Blessed One became a great strongman, and in a contest of strength, the strongman defeated other strongmen, with that karma, the Blessed One felt pain in his back. Because the Blessed One became a doctor, and in anger, gave the wrong medicine to a patient, causing the illness to worsen, with that karma, the Blessed One developed a wind disease. For the same reason, the Blessed One became seriously ill. Because the Blessed One became a human king and showed people the sight of killing fish, with that karma, on the day the Shakya clan was massacred, the Blessed One had a severe headache. The result of this karma is suffering, which will be experienced many times in the lower realms. The remaining result connected to karma and its consequences is only the remainder of experience that can be known. Thus it is said. In order to tame those to be tamed, he showed the practice of asceticism, and also to show that purity cannot be attained by mere discipline and asceticism, but that purity can only be recognized by wisdom itself, and also because "How can a bald monk have enlightenment, since enlightenment is extremely difficult to obtain?" the result of that evil speech is difficult to endure, and in order to prevent the impure actions of those to be tamed, the Tathagata showed the practice of asceticism.

O! The emanation of the body is also of two kinds: related to one's own body and related to another's body. Among these, the emanation related to the body is the manifestation in the form of a universal monarch and so on. For example, in Shravasti, in order to subdue the king of Kapilavastu, our teacher assumed the form of a universal monarch, wearing ornaments and holding a bow. His retinue, all the great Arhats, appeared as the forms of princes and great ministers, wearing various ornaments, preventing those who had renounced from wearing ornaments. Such limitless bodily emanations, the Tathagatas, Bodhisattvas, and great Shravakas should all understand. Furthermore, sometimes going to the country where there are those to be tamed, sometimes bringing those to be tamed to their own country, and sometimes abiding in one country, yet showing their own possessions and so on in all directions and all realms, thereby making the non-true discriminations of those to be tamed become peaceful. By placing the heedless in a state of mindfulness, their suffering is thereby pacified. For example, our teacher subdued Nanda, Angulimala, Ajatashatru, and Kshanti, and so on. Therefore, the conduct of the Buddhas, Bhagavat, Bodhisattvas, and Shravakas is inconceivable, what need is there to mention their enlightenment? Those who desire liberation from them should accomplish it through faith. The bodily emanation related to another's body is when demons and others appear as the form of the Buddha. The unrelated bodily emanation is the manifestation in the form of the nature of the seven precious things such as earth, and the manifestation of the Buddha's form without another, and the illumination of the world with rays, and the manifestation of various births. The emanation related to one's own body is when the Brahma's voice makes all the limitless realms of the world understand. The emanation related to another's body is when his Shravakas and others, even the unfathomable dharmas, are the Great Vehicle of the Buddha.
