It is not so. It is for the sake of thoroughly realizing the nature of truth separately. The eightfold noble path is the path that truly produces purity. Before that, this path, through cultivation, eliminates the afflictions to be abandoned and truly arises for the sake of purification. These are the factors of enlightenment, which should be understood in this order. Without distinction, the factors of enlightenment are established in five ways, which should be understood, such as the ways of establishment mentioned in the Abhidharma-samuccaya. I have not written them in detail here, fearing that they are too numerous. It should be understood from there. The path that depends on the difference of faculties has four aspects: a dull faculty that has not attained the essence of meditative concentration is a path of slow and difficult direct perception. A sharp faculty that has not attained the essence of meditative concentration is a path of quick but difficult direct perception. A dull faculty that has attained the essence of meditative concentration is a path of slow but easy direct perception. A sharp faculty that has attained the essence of meditative concentration is a path of quick and easy direct perception. The path that completely purifies the three trainings consists of four things: namely, non-covetousness, non-harmfulness, right mindfulness, and right concentration. Among these, non-covetousness and non-harmfulness purify the training in higher discipline, because they destroy the basis of training through attachment and anger. Right mindfulness purifies the training in higher mind, because it prevents complete delusion and allows the mind to be concentrated. Right concentration purifies the training in higher wisdom, because it allows one to fully understand the mind in equipoise as it is. The path that accomplishes all qualities is twofold: namely, tranquility (śamatha) and insight (vipaśyanā). Among these, tranquility is the nine mental abidings, namely: in whatever way, placing the mind internally, as well as truly placing, settling, closely placing, taming, pacifying, closely

To pacify, to make one-pointed, and to establish equally. Among them, for external objects of focus, gathering the earth and so on separately, manifesting and gathering the mind inwardly, and binding it closely is to establish. Thus, the mind that is initially bound closely is a coarse movement. By relying on that very object of focus, the manifestation of making it subtle through application is to truly establish. Thus, when the established mind is distracted outwardly due to the confusion of mindfulness, gathering it separately again is to subdue. Initially, these minds do not scatter outwardly, therefore, abiding closely with mindfulness is to abide closely. Starting from being distracted from the previous characteristic itself, with the faults of form and so on as the main perception, not allowing the mind to be distracted is to tame. To regard the afflictions near to the mental discriminations that completely disturb the mind as faults, and not to be distracted, is to pacify. When practicing discriminations and so on due to the confusion of mindfulness, making them even more peaceful is to be nearly peaceful. Without diminishing due to manifest actions, and without interruption, the continuous abiding in samadhi is to make it one-pointed. Because of extreme familiarity, there is no manifest action, and without effort, the mind naturally accomplishes samadhi, and without distraction, it enters, which is to establish it equally. When a yogi diligently focuses on the Dharma with what kind of wisdom, for the things to be known, destroying what is attained, and thoroughly distinguishing the things to be known as they are, and using non-discriminating attention combined with wisdom as a cause, and completely distinguishing, and properly thinking, completely practicing, and universally arising, this is wisdom vipassana. The paths The summarized path has three faculties, namely: This is how, combined with the part of ascertainment, and at the fifteen moments of the path of seeing, in order to realize the thusness that was previously unknown, entering and making all the unknown known, and from the sixteenth moment of the path of seeing, the vajra-like samadhi.
