It is the fruit. In this regard, with equanimity in mind, one truly sees the faults of desire, and individually experiences the coarse characteristics. Because those things are without substance, one individually experiences the peaceful characteristics in the first dhyana. This is the mindfulness of individually knowing characteristics. Furthermore, one should know much hearing and thinking. Above that, transcending hearing and thinking, from the aspect of solely practicing, with the mind's peaceful characteristics, focusing on the sign, the practice of calm abiding and insight, and how to seek the coarse and subtle, this is even more believing, it is called superior liberation. Those who are initially accustomed to karma, together with the path of abandonment, are mindful, it is extremely solitary. Because it abandons the most excellent aspect of afflictions, and because it abandons the evil deeds of equanimity. That yogi, above, delights in seeing the benefits of abandoning and having abandoned, extremely little solitude, endowed with joy and happiness. From time to time, with extremely faithful mindfulness, between the elimination of dullness and agitation, the mind is always joyful, this is the gathering of joy and happiness. The virtuous application, with the yogi who is perfectly endowed, the afflictions that act in desire, completely binding, completely acting, those, in order to realize the meaning of extreme abandonment, those that are in accordance with non-arising, with the sign of ugliness in mind, individually knowing, this is the mindfulness of investigation. That yogi, from practicing the antidote practice, the application is existence, but it is not for abandoning the afflictions of acting in desire. The application of the first dhyana reaches the ultimate, the antidote mindfulness is the application reaching the ultimate. Immediately entering into the samadhi of the actual first dhyana, in order to realize, therefore it is called the fruit of the application reaching the ultimate. How to be mindful in order to attain the first dhyana, likewise, in order to attain the realm of neither perception nor non-perception, mindfulness should be appropriately combined. All lower grounds are coarse characteristics, it is up to the realm of nothingness. The measurer establishes

Having fully cultivated the small first dhyana, one is born in the Brahma host realm. Having fully cultivated the medium one, one is born in the retinue of Brahma. Having fully cultivated the great one, one is born as Great Brahma. And so forth, just as previously explained. In the formless realms, there is no other place, and there is no difference in births. By fully cultivating the small, medium, and great absorptions, one knows that among the births of those in the formless realms, there are high and low, inferior and superior. Among these, the low and high are due to differences in lifespan and so forth. The inferior and superior are due to differences in the presence or absence of afflictions, and their quantity. The establishment of names is as follows: The samadhi gathered by the first dhyana, such samadhi is entered into by the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, and the Bodhisattvas who have attained great power. If the Hearers and Solitary Buddhas do not even know the names of those samadhis, how could they enter into them or know their number? Just as it is gathered by the first dhyana, so too, the remainder is gathered by dhyana and the formless realms. Thus, it is said to rely on the perfection of dhyana. Purity is from the first dhyana, which is the ultimate limit, up to the realm of neither perception nor non-perception. Thus, dhyana and the formless realms, and other samadhis with endless distinctions, all those that do not possess the limbs of enlightenment are worldly. The formless realms are four, namely: the sphere of infinite space, the sphere of infinite consciousness, the sphere of nothingness, and the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception. Among these, the sphere of infinite space is free from three perceptions, namely: the perception of forms such as blue, the perception of obstructions such as walls and cities, and the perception of differences such as palaces, gardens, mountains, rivers, the moon, and the sun. The sphere of infinite consciousness is free from the perception of space. The sphere of nothingness is free from the perception of consciousness. The sphere of neither perception nor non-perception is also free from the perception of nothingness. Those formless
