What is pure? Here, the four roots that have not been revealed are completely defiled. With these defiled minds, they become defiled through the gate of defiled meditation, in order to taste the joy of extreme taming. With view, the meditator of the supreme view, the meditation turns into a defiled nature, because relying on meditation, all views such as remembering the past arise. With pride, the meditator of the supreme pride, the meditation turns into a defiled nature, because he walks by the superior and increasing realization. With ignorance, the meditator of the supreme doubt, the meditation turns into a defiled nature, because without realizing the truth and wanting liberation, the doubt arises that this is not liberation in the superior and increasing realization. Thus, the completely defiled mind, in the desire realm and the formless realm, can increase the defilements and near defilements that follow. Purity, such as ascetic meditation, etc., although it is a worldly dharma, is actually good, because it is free from the faults of complete defilement, etc. It turns into purity from two causes, namely, being free from the faults of complete defilement, etc., and being free from the stains of complete entanglement. Establishment has four aspects: limb establishment, samadhi establishment, limit establishment, and naming. Among them, limb establishment is like saying that the first dhyana has five limbs, etc. The first dhyana has five limbs, namely, investigation, analysis, joy, happiness, and one-pointedness of mind. Among them, investigation and analysis are the limbs of the antidote, joy and happiness are the limbs of benefit, and one-pointedness of mind is the limb on which the limbs of antidote and benefit depend. Possessing these five limbs, the first dhyana can be free from two faults, namely, being free from desire and being free from sinful and unwholesome dharmas, and because investigation and analysis are both pacified, there is no investigation.

Moreover, the second dhyana, which is without discrimination, has four branches. These four branches are: inner purity, joy, happiness, and one-pointedness of mind. Among these, inner purity is the branch of antidote, joy and happiness are the branches of benefit, and one-pointedness of mind is the branch of support. The third dhyana has five branches. These five branches are: because joy is also abandoned, there is equanimity, mindfulness, clear knowing, happiness, and one-pointedness of mind. Among these, equanimity, mindfulness, and clear knowing are the branches of antidote, happiness is the branch of benefit, and one-pointedness of mind is the branch of support. The fourth dhyana has four branches. These four branches are: purity of equanimity, purity of mindfulness, and because suffering, pleasantness, and unpleasantness are abandoned as before, the feeling of neither suffering nor happiness, and one-pointedness of mind. Among these, purity of equanimity and purity of mindfulness are the branches of antidote, the feeling of neither suffering nor happiness is the branch of benefit, and one-pointedness of mind is the branch of support. In the Vinaya of the Sthavira school, five dhyanas are explained. Among them, the first dhyana, which is associated with vitarka, vicara, joy, happiness, and one-pointedness of mind, has five branches. The second dhyana, which is associated with vicara, joy, happiness, and one-pointedness of mind, has four branches. The third dhyana, which is associated with joy, happiness, and one-pointedness of mind, has three branches. The fourth dhyana, which is associated with happiness and one-pointedness of mind, has two branches. The fifth dhyana, which is associated with equanimity and one-pointedness of mind, has two branches. The way to establish samapatti is: one enters the first dhyana through seven types of attention, and similarly up to the realm of neither perception nor non-perception. These seven types of attention are: attention to the individual characteristics, increased liberation, tranquility, reverence for joy, investigation, the ultimate of application, and the ultimate of application.
