布施有三种,即:宣说佛法,讲述方法,以及为使他人精进而提供帮助。不应布施之物有三种,即:酒、毒药和武器。戒律有两种,即:身戒和语戒。其中,身戒有三种,即:不杀生,不偷盗,不邪淫。语戒有四种,即:不妄语,不离间语,不恶语,不绮语。又有五种,即:从不杀生等戒的自性,即是断除的戒律之体;进入的戒律之体,即是积聚善法的戒律;利益有情之戒律;集合的戒律;以及发起的戒律。其中,别解脱戒有八种,即:近事男戒,近事女戒,沙弥戒,沙弥尼戒,式叉摩那戒,比丘戒,比丘尼戒,以及八关斋戒。又有五种戒,即:别解脱戒,戒律戒,灌顶戒,禅定戒,以及无漏戒。集合的戒律有四种,即:对治近恼乱分别念的对治法,守护诸根之门;对治近恼乱所依之不可行之对治法,知量而食;对治近恼乱不精进之对治法,夜晚和清晨不睡眠而修习随顺之行;对治近恼乱后悔之对治法,安住于正知。发起的戒律是心所生,有三种。即:贪心的对治法,无贪的自性,无贪心;害心的对治法,无嗔的自性,不害之心;邪见的对治法,无痴的自性,正确的见解。戒律无垢。

Generosity is of three kinds, namely: teaching the Dharma, explaining methods, and assisting others to become skilled. There are three things that should not be given, namely: alcohol, poison, and weapons. Discipline is of two kinds, namely: bodily and verbal. Among these, bodily discipline is of three kinds, namely: abstaining from killing, abstaining from taking what is not given, and abstaining from sexual misconduct. Verbal discipline is of four kinds, namely: abstaining from lying, abstaining from divisive speech, abstaining from harsh speech, and abstaining from idle chatter. Again, there are five kinds, namely: the nature of abstaining from killing and so forth, which is the essence of the discipline of restraint; the essence of the discipline of entering, which is the discipline of accumulating virtuous qualities; the discipline of benefiting sentient beings; the discipline of assembly; and the discipline of thorough arousal. Among these, the discipline of restraint is of eight kinds, namely: the vows of a male lay follower, the vows of a female lay follower, the vows of a novice monk, the vows of a novice nun, the vows of a probationary nun, the vows of a fully ordained monk, the vows of a fully ordained nun, and the vows of observing the eight precepts. Again, there are five kinds of vows, namely: the vows of individual liberation, the vows of discipline, the vows of empowerment, the vows of meditation, and the vows of non-contamination. The discipline of assembly is of four kinds, namely: the antidote to afflictive conceptual thoughts, guarding the doors of the senses; the antidote to afflictive dependence on unsuitable actions, knowing the measure of food; the antidote to afflictive non-exertion, not sleeping at night and dawn, but engaging in appropriate practices; and the antidote to afflictive regret, abiding in mindfulness. The discipline of arousal is mental, and is of three kinds. Namely: the antidote to greed, the nature of non-attachment, absence of greed; the antidote to malice, the nature of non-hatred, a mind of non-harm; the antidote to wrong views, the nature of non-delusion, correct view. Discipline is without defilement.

The perfection of diligence is ultimate.
