Diligence, mindfulness, wisdom, and samadhi, etc., are the preliminaries. The path is the abandonment of all outflows, because of what emptiness, the opponents (refute)." As it is said, this path is the noble path. What, refers to the noble path. Emptiness, refers to incompleteness. Outsiders, refers to those who manifest arrogance through the liberation of outsiders, such as Ishvara, etc., and sages such as Kṛta and Vasiṣṭha, etc. Thus, even with two kinds of paths, one can be separated from attachment to the desire realm and be born in all the form realms, except for the Great Brahma and the non-perceptual beings. The noble non-returner, at whatever time he obtains separation from attachment to the form realm, at that time he will be born near the formless realm. So, what is the noble one who is detached from desire for the formless realm like? It is said: Thus, a burning iron ball is placed in a very large pile of firewood, and when all the firewood is burned to ashes, the complete fullness of the firewood gradually cools down. Similarly, the noble Śrāvaka is like an iron ball, the fire of the path of knowing the Dharma of suffering is completely blazing, the pile of firewood of afflictions is very large, and when it is placed in what is to be abandoned by the path of seeing and the path of cultivation, after all of them are completely burned, the firewood of afflictions is completely pacified, and the one who is completely blazing also abides in the realm of Nirvana with remainder, because it is the embers of the fire of the path of no more learning. Gradually, after fully enjoying all the ripening of karma, abandoning one's own body, one cools down by entering Nirvana without remainder. Like a burning iron ball, all the firewood of afflictions is burned, the Arhat abides in the remainder, and gradually cools down. At that time, even without a body, its previous body will also cease, and no other suffering will arise, because all causes are completely exhausted. Thus it is said. If at that time one obtains such a realm of Nirvana without remainder, then, whether it is a god or a human or other, how should it be called? It is said: Nirvana without remainder is suffering.

Since the causes of suffering are completely pacified, there is no clinging, therefore there is no dwelling in the six realms. When there are no realms, all designations cease. The basis for designations such as gods and humans is the realms. Therefore, when all realms are nonexistent, the designation of this or that ceases from these realms. For example, the basis for all designations such as the burning of fire is firewood. Similarly, all designations apply to a person with clinging. It is not so without clinging. Furthermore, it is said: All activities of designation, their basis is the object of action. When there is no object of action, designation ceases, like fire when firewood is exhausted. Thus it is said. Likewise, for that very reason, this cannot be called either one or other. It is not sentient, not non-sentient, it is beyond number in all places. If it is said that for those who have been liberated from suffering, there is no designation at all, then it is said: There is designation. However, it cannot be expressed by the designation of clinging. It can be expressed by the designation of non-clinging. The designation of non-clinging has been spoken, that is: liberation, peace, nectar, seed, faultless, complete liberation from suffering, Buddha, Sugata, protector, etc., can be expressed at that time, but not otherwise. Here, in brief, there are two kinds of afflictions: latent and non-latent. So, what is latent? What is non-latent? It is said: Like moist fine dust, these latencies are very firmly deposited and interconnected in the three realms, so they are called latent. It is also said: In the three realms, with latency, interconnected, therefore called latent. Non-latent is the affliction itself, it is merely completely entangled. Therefore, it is not latent. Therefore, it is called non-latent. What is latency again? It is that from which it similarly settles, and is the cause of the arising, abiding, and increasing of the defiled dharmas. Therefore, it is of two kinds, namely: associated with mind and not associated with mind. It is also said: It is associated with mind, not associated with

It should be understood as such. It is said. Then, what is the meaning of being associated with the mind? Answer: For example, the edge of an anthill's support is an extremely difficult to subdue reliance, and it is the reason why the ants' own anthill is tall. Similarly, the non-associated habitual tendencies of sentient beings are extremely difficult to subdue reliance, and they are the seeds of the arising of evils. In whatever way, the mind that has not abandoned afflictions, as well as fainting and deep sleep, as well as being suppressed by mindless sleep, as well as entering the state of non-perception, as well as the non-perceptual beings, as well as entering the cessation of perception and feeling. These are all said to be possessed of non-associated habitual tendencies. For example, the top of an anthill is non-reliant, easy to subdue, and completely rises from its own reliance. Similarly, associated habitual tendencies, or other afflictions or near afflictions, etc., are impermanent, merely common behaviors, easy to subdue, and should be understood as the seeds of realizing one's own reliance. Again, it is said: The meaning of the remaining reliance of non-association should be understood as being like the top of an anthill. It is said. Similarly, association is merely common behavior, and should be understood as being like a pile of anthill soil. It is said. If this is the case, if non-associated habitual tendencies are constantly present, why do the secondary afflictions not constantly arise? Answer: There are three causes of afflictions, namely: object, the encounter of object and subject, as well as not abandoning non-associated habitual tendencies, and improper attention. From this, these three are the complete causes of afflictions. The collection of causes is occasional, therefore secondary afflictions do not arise at all times. Again, it is said: The object is obtained by the subject, non-associated habitual tendencies are the reliance, and improper attention, these three are the causes of afflictions. It is said. If with the noble path or the non-Buddhist path, is it the same to abandon the associated or to abandon the non-associated? Answer: Abandon the non-associated. Because it is the place of the seeds of association, because it is difficult to accomplish, and because it is extremely firm. From abandoning these, it is the same.
