will be explained, through the distinction of the grasper and the grasped, explaining the nature of the two minds. If external objects are not directly perceived as they appear, then how do they exist? Why would one think that external objects such as the sun are directly perceived, how could they not exist? Mentioning the sun and moon, etc., external objects such as the sun are not real, however, these are emanations of the mind, appearances of the mind itself, not external objects. Not only the sun, etc., but also these three realms, namely the desire realm, the form realm, and the formless realm, these three realms are the three realms. How vast is their extent? "The peak of existence" is mentioned, up to the extent completely defined by the peak of existence. Like this, from "neither perception nor non-perception," how do all these sentient and non-sentient beings appear? All these objects are "drops of poison of consciousness." It means that they pervade like drops of poison. The word "poison" is mentioned to subtly indicate that the teacher does not approve of the Yogacara school's view. Now, to explain generally to the Yogacarins, it is said, "If it appears," etc. If one admits that the aspect of things appears in consciousness, then how does one understand "there are no external objects"? As long as the aspect of external objects has not arisen in consciousness, then how does its aspect appear? If the aspect has not arisen, then its aspect is unreasonable, whenever the object is near, its aspect will arise in consciousness, at that time, the existence of external objects is established, so they say. Otherwise, if not relying on the object, the aspect of the object either arises or does not arise. Like this, if considering from the perspective of the mind, if external objects appear, how could they not exist? How could one understand it as non-existent? Because non-existent things like rabbit horns do not appear. Appearance also pervades existence, the nature of non-existence cannot appear. Thus, to the opponent who asserts external objects, the Yogacara school replies: because of appearance, things exist, but appearance is not the thing itself.

Therefore, that is because it is uncertain. For example, does a dream not appear? Although it appears to be real, it is not actually real, meaning "non-existent." Because things are close by, the appearance of things does not arise in cognition. For example, for someone with cataracts, even if there is nothing, the appearance of hairs arises in cognition. Therefore, by the power of habit, the appearance of things appears in cognition, but not because external things actually exist. Furthermore, how does it appear as the aspect of another mind? It mentions "additional impurities" and so on. Because by the power of habit, the additional impurities obscure the self-nature of wisdom's realization, therefore it appears as the aspect of another mind. The word "mind" is a synonym for cognition. Therefore, cognition itself is the meaning of appearance. How does it appear? It mentions "like crystal." Just as a jewel crystal is obscured from its own nature by additional impurities and appears as the aspect of other things, cognition is also the same. Even though it is obvious that a jewel crystal appears as other things due to additional reasons, how does cognition appear as other things since the reasons for cognition are not obvious? It mentions "self-nature itself does not appear." If one engages in conceptual thought about forms and so on, because it is the universal self-nature, self-nature itself does not appear, but those are also like being imbued with merit and non-merit, and unwavering habits, they obtain the aspect of their own accumulated characteristics, and that will appear in conceptual thought, as if obtaining the very object of sight. Therefore, the meaning is that obtaining the aspect of another mind is the cause of habit. How does one mind not appear as two? It mentions "the mind is" and so on. If one mind itself is also the same for the sake of discriminating and accepting, it is because of discriminatory confusion. Also, by habit and some who are skilled in means, it appears as two by the distinction of the apprehended aspect and the apprehending aspect, meaning dualistic grasping. Because one does not understand the self-nature of the apprehended and the apprehending,

In order to show the characteristics of those two, it is said, "The aspect of the grasped" and so on. The aspect of the grasped is unmoving, which means it is without movement. Abiding as if it were an external object, it appears as if it were external. The grasper is also with life, which means it is with movement, and the inner is likened to being with that function, that is the meaning. It will be taught in this way. The meaning is, knowing in the aspect of the grasped is the grasper. Now, the teacher, with the negation of the nature of the grasped and the grasper as a preliminary, in order to refute the tenet that speaks of external objects, says, "Here, there is not even a little of inner and outer." Here, even a little, that is, the nature of the external grasped is not found, and the nature of the internal grasper is also not. Apart from the knower, there is no other nature of the grasped and the grasper. Moreover, it is unreasonable for both to arise in one instant. If there is no relationship of being its nature and arising from it, then it does not belong to another. The grasper is not the nature of the grasped, because it is admitted to be different. It is also not born from it, because it arises simultaneously. Because if it were its nature and born from it, then the nature of the grasped and the grasper would be established. Because it is established by relying on one, it is not the nature of the grasped and the grasper. Because the grasped is the completely imputed, it is the nature of being inconceivable. Therefore, relying on what is knowing called the grasper? It is said, "There is nothing in between," between the sense faculty and the object, there is not even a little of the nature of the grasped and the grasper. If the grasped ceases, then the grasper will definitely not revert, because it is not its nature, nor is it its result. Therefore, it is said, "Not non-existent," with a double negation to realize the true meaning. Therefore, from the nature of the grasped and the grasper, the grasper is not non-existent, but it is indeed existent. What the Yogacara says, that by the power of ignorance, the nature of the aspect appears in the mind, that is also unreasonable. Because the non-aspect is the reality of knowing, and having become a false nature without connection to it, how can it
