Since there is no need to dislike one's own appearance, what is the use of external objects? Like this, external objects are the fruit of habit. When habit resides in the mind, the fruit arises from it. It's like planting seeds in a field, fruits won't grow on the top of a mountain. If the mind itself appears as the form of an object, then what is it that is grasped at that time? It is said that it is called 'consciousness' and so on, this is discrimination. Consciousness arises from the outside, and is drawn from the movement of objects, what does it grasp? If it doesn't grasp, wouldn't it become grasping? Because of the power of habit, that is its appearance. Therefore, the arising of its appearance in the mind is grasping, and not something else. Furthermore, does the mind exist from the beginning or not? There are two possibilities. If it exists from the beginning, and its appearance arises from the mind, then what is the need to grasp the objects that arise later? If it doesn't exist at the beginning, but arises later and grasps the object, then that is not the case. Because at that time the object has ceased, what does it grasp? If it arises simultaneously, since there is no relationship of benefiting and being benefited, how can it become the object of what is to be taken and what can take? Therefore, it has been shown that external objects cannot be established through direct perception. Some people think that external objects can be established through inference, like this, as long as the external object has not produced a consciousness similar to itself, how can its appearance appear before that? Therefore, the production of the object itself is called grasping the object. But that is also not right, like dreams and so on, because there is no relationship of following and opposing. Therefore, it is not established through inference either. If it is said that although it cannot be established through direct perception and inference, it can be established through scripture, it is said that it is called 'scripture' and so on. Scripture refers to the words of the Buddha Bhagavan, through which the true realization of external objects is established by valid cognition. Just as the Bhagavan also said that relying on the eye and form, eye consciousness arises. Here the answer is given: What need is there for scripture for direct perception of objects? Such words were spoken.

What need is there for scripture for what is obvious? And where are the words of scripture? It is said, "unseen," that which is beyond the senses, such as the next world, is not within the realm of the obvious, and is understood by following the teachings of the scriptures. This will be explained as follows: If external objects exist, then the obvious itself completely refutes them, so what is the use of the words of scripture? But if they do not exist, then they cannot be proven by the words of scripture either. Therefore, for that very reason, it is said, "the meaning of straightforwardness," and so on. Even the words of scripture cannot prove that external objects exist. Why? Because it is the meaning of straightforwardness. Thus, all that is taught as the meaning of straightforwardness is to be explained in four ways: The "intention" is what intention is relied upon to apply the words. The "object of beings to be tamed" is to whom it is taught. The "fruit" is what is accomplished by teaching. The "cause" is what is used to examine the meaning that is intended to be revealed. Again, here, the intention is spoken of. What is the intention here? It is said: In order to abandon the view of some who believe that the self is the seer and the eater, and so on, the aggregates of form and so on are taught. Furthermore, the Blessed One taught: Thus, when the objects are determined separately, where should the faculties, the mind, the seer, and the object be placed? It is taught that it is the realm of the mind. That is to say, the mind itself is established as the nature of the object and the faculties, and not as an external object. What then? It is said, "one's own seed," and so on. Because, by awakening the difference in the power of the habitual tendencies of other conditions, the eye consciousness arises immediately from one's own seed, the all-ground consciousness, and this is called the faculties. Therefore, that itself is also the mind, and by the power of habitual tendencies, the appearance of objects such as blue and yellow arises, and this is to be understood as the object. If consciousness is not ultimately different, then how can the distinction between faculties and objects be differentiated? It is said, "these are of the intellect," and so on. The eye and form, and so on, are external objects.
