Because it is to show that things do not change when they do mutually contradictory actions. Therefore, it is said, "Birds," and so on. Birds are birds, and they go into the sky as they please. Although the visual consciousness of the eye can see things by acting together with light, even so, how can owls see food and other things in the darkness without light? How can mice do the same in holes, without the appearance of holes? If the eye can see things without obstruction, then how can fish see things in the water, that is, obstructed by the water of the ocean? If the objects of sense consciousness are determined separately, then snakes are snakes, how can they both hear and see with two eyes? Such other contradictions show that things revolve in many ways, that is, they are seen as contradictions. Therefore, the proximate cause can be inferred. Thus, the distinction of these things is due to the association with contradictory properties and the distinction of causes. If one does not want the proximate cause of things, then nothing will be different. If there is no difference, then the various things will also become non-different. Why would all those who claim another cause not become happiness or suffering? Similarly, fruits, light, mirrors, and so on, will arise even without the actions of seeds, trunks, and firewood. In this way, by negating the cause arising from chance, what was previously shown is made more stable, and in order to show that there is no other action apart from the entity of consciousness, it is said, "Place," and so on. A man accustomed to hitting an enemy, without understanding the distinction of consciousness for the place and the throwing without seeing the place, that is, without understanding the nature of consciousness, does not feel the hit, how can the arrows be with fruit? It is said, "The flow of water," and so on, if what arises is not consciousness, like the flow of water, then how can any small amount of scripture that is grasped become familiar?

Even without contrivance, one does not perceive it, and abides in that very state. Like this, if the scriptures are lost from the mind, how can they be received from the continuum of others? This is reasonable. To explain that the cause of moving beings is Ishvara (自在天). Therefore, it is said "mountains" etc. If there is nothing to do, then those mountains will become high. Similarly, there is the great ocean, the ocean is unfathomable. Atoms are aggregates. How do atoms, which are aggregates, produce results in the order of two aggregates and three aggregates? Because it is permanent, it is not reasonable to produce effects either in sequence or simultaneously. Therefore, to show that the cause of the arising of various things is not Ishvara, nor is it the cause of destruction. Therefore, it is said "endowed with power" etc. The word "and" is the meaning of distinction. If the result is produced with great power, then like a madman, how does one destroy one's own efforts at the time of the cessation of various things? That is the meaning. Therefore, Ishvara etc. should not be the agent. To show how mantras can have power if one does not accept only consciousness, it is said "magnet" etc. Magnet etc. include amber etc. Attraction refers to attracting iron and grass, similarly, who has done the pacifying of poison by mantras and the curing of epidemics by medicine? That is the meaning. Now, to conclude, it is said "Therefore, due to various ignorances." Therefore, all those various things that appear as external objects are manifested by the mind. The mind itself, by the power of habituation, manifests the various natures of the imagined, and it is not an external object. Also, what can I do for those who do not understand the various ignorances? If you ask what it is like, it is said "small bird" etc. The small bird is a kind of bird. Its sound is the sound of the cuckoo. Its sound image is the sound image of the small bird, which is vast. Just as one does not understand a little other part of the sound image of the small bird. This is the meaning of "similarly". From the mind as a substitute for the external object.

If you don't agree, then it contradicts the scriptures. Having mentioned "exhaustion" etc., if external objects do not exist, then how is it reasonable for yogis to meditate on exhaustion, just like meditating on earth etc.? Because things with a stable nature should not be placed as this and that. When the meditation on exhaustion is established in one's own treatise, in order to explain it in this way, therefore, "therefore" etc. are mentioned. Therefore, in this way, it is reasonable for yogis to meditate on exhaustion. How is it? This mind itself is like crystal, like a crystal jewel. In various ways, that is, when the pervasive mistaken habit on objects such as earth etc., then it is reasonable to meditate on exhaustion, but not because of admitting external objects, that is its meaning. How does it pervade? Having mentioned "Habits are like oil on water" etc. Just as when oil is dropped on water, it spreads everywhere when dropped from one direction, so too, on the water of habits, it pervades with the mind, that is its meaning. Similarly, in order to show that yogis who only believe in Mind-Only are not surprised, "worldly people" etc. are mentioned. The wonders of worldly people are that children are amazed at external objects, but this is not amazing, meaning do not be amazed. The hair of all seeds refers to the Alaya consciousness, because it is the abode of the seeds of the entering consciousnesses. All seeds arise from there etc. Yogis should think like this and determine with wisdom. Now, in order to refute others who say that external objects are established by direct perception, so the question is asked, "How" etc. How are the appearing pot and cloth etc., those that obtain appearance by name, if these things exist, then they exist. How do you determine that they exist? This is the question. In order to accept and refute the doubts of others, "Alas" etc. are mentioned. The word "if" means "if". If you realize that those are mind, then alas, it is amazing. You should not hate the mind that has no cause. Which is the mind?
