As previously stated, self-nature is not established in direct perception. Furthermore, if it is said that it appears to erroneous direct perception, if one intends to harm with direct perception, then it is not a harm. This is like the direct perception of those with cataracts, which, being the object of the eye sense, cannot reasonably harm the object of perception, such as the moon. However, if it is said that it appears to non-deceptive direct perception, then this is unestablished, as the direct perception of those who see the other shore does not have non-deception in the meaning of suchness, as previously stated. The Blessed One also said: "Eye and ear and nose are not valid cognitions. Tongue and body and mind are not valid cognitions. If these faculties were valid, what use would the noble path be to anyone?" Thus, these faculties are not valid cognitions, as their nature is inanimate and indeterminate. Therefore, whoever desires the path of nirvana should engage in the activity of the noble path. Thus it is said. Therefore, only the direct perception of the Thus-Gone One is non-deceptive in ultimate truth. They do not perceive even a small amount of true objects. As it is said, "Subhuti, those foolish, blind, and eyeless individuals consider as existent what is not perceived by the five eyes of the Thus-Gone One, from form, feeling, perception, formation, and consciousness, up to the wisdom of omniscience." This is extensively taught. Furthermore, if it is said that inference also harms the proposition, this is also unreasonable, as inference does not establish even a small amount of the true self-nature of things, as previously stated. In the world, the certainty of fire, etc., from signs such as smoke, etc., is also not the true object of humans, etc., because such certainty can also exist in dreams, and because true fire and smoke, etc., have been previously refuted, so there is nothing at all. Moreover, all conventional things are like illusions, also dependent on causes and conditions. Therefore, occasionality is not contradictory. For those who assert that things arise only without cause, certainty and uncertainty are contradictory.

It is not so for those who say that birth has causes. In the ultimate sense, since there is no birth, occasionality itself is simply not established. Furthermore, saying things like "which are the cities of the thirty-three gods" is also not contradictory, because everything exists in conventional truth. To assert that things are of a nature of utter non-existence, like the hairs of a tortoise, is not correct. What then? It is like the nature of illusion and dreams, etc. Likewise, the Bhagavan also said: "Great Wisdom, a Bodhisattva should not assert that all dharmas are without inherent existence." What then should be said? "Great Wisdom, because of the characteristics of appearance and non-appearance, a Bodhisattva should show all dharmas to be like illusions and dreams." Therefore, the meaning of the sutra is that the characteristic of appearance is conventional truth, and the characteristic of non-appearance is ultimate truth. That is: In conventional truth, everything exists; in ultimate truth, it does not exist. Dharmas are without inherent existence; this has been shown in ultimate truth. Thus it is said. Therefore, the Bhagavan taught all dharmas relying on conventional truth, so there is no contradiction. As it is said in the Bhagavati Sutra: "Again, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva relies on the designations of the world and manifestly awakens to unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. But in ultimate truth, whatever form, feeling, perception, formation, or consciousness is practiced for the sake of awakening, even a little of it does not exist. Likewise, the eighteen elements, the six contacts, the six feelings, the six elements, the twelve links of dependent origination, the perfections, emptiness, the mindfulnesses, the perfect abandonments, the miraculous feet, the faculties, the powers, the limbs of enlightenment, the eightfold noble path, the truths, the meditations, the immeasurables, the formless ones, the doors of liberation, the gradual abidings in meditative equipoise, and the superknowledges.
