When the cause exists, only the cause exists; when the effect exists, the cause does not exist. Therefore, do not have thoughts of offerings and the like. If you say that, it is also unreasonable, because arising is not different from existing things. Like you say, the arising of the effect is only from the cause and the immediate condition. Those who say that the immediate condition exists also only slightly acknowledge the offering. If it is not like that, then what is the meaning of the word "immediate condition"? Because the meanings of immediate condition, offering, and contact are not different, if you acknowledge these, then you will indirectly acknowledge that the cause and the effect are simultaneous. Because for existing things, there is no other possibility of two offerings at other times. Furthermore, if it is inferred that the effect arises from the destruction of the cause, that is not possible, so you easily abandon that point. Therefore, you acknowledge that the effect arises from offering from such a cause. Regarding this, the thought will arise: Is it that the entire self offers? Or is it that a part offers? Because there is no other possibility besides that. Therefore, if you say that the cause is only the moment of the effect and the offering, and it is neither a part offering nor a whole self offering, then what does that say? It will become: offering is, offering is, and offering is not. Who else can say such very good words like this? Furthermore, if the cause does not exist when the effect exists, then it cannot be said that the effect arises only from the destruction of the cause, because at that time there is no destruction of the cause at all. When the cause is destroyed, the effect does not exist.

It is not so, because there are similar refutations and examinations for this as well. Thus, if one offers things and non-things to that with one part, then at that time it would follow that it has parts. If it is with all of oneself, then at that time it would be the same time. Similarly, if shadows, the sun, and streams of water are not cut off by all of oneself, then they would become the same place. If one offers with one part, then it would follow that it has parts. For us, all of these things and non-things are not established in the ultimate truth, because it is free from all the nets of elaboration such as things and non-things. There is nothing called non-things in name, let alone anything that becomes a true offering. However, in later times, it is only established by negating the own nature of things. Even so, nothing arises without interruption, it is merely non-existence. Since mere negation is nothing, the thought of ultimate offerings and so on does not arise along with it. Because cause and effect are accepted as things themselves in the ultimate truth, the thought of offering with one part and so on arises. In the noble "Sālu Green Tree Sutra," the Blessed One spoke of the offering of cause and effect with the example of the high and low of a balance, which is to abandon the view of annihilation and to regard the things of cause and effect as merely conventional truths, not ultimate truths, because the balance is not established in the ultimate truth. Thus, if the balance shows the nature of having limbs as an example, then it is not established, because it is impossible for one thing to have two contradictory functions such as high and low at the same time. It is also not established as the nature of accumulated atoms, because it is impossible to accumulate atoms that have no parts. If it does have parts, then it would follow that it is a non-thing. However, if the balance relies on the nature of appearing as consciousness, then it is only the nature of being completely imputed, therefore it is false, so how can it become existent? Completely

Consciousness is also not embodied, therefore it does not go up and down. This also refutes shadows, the sun, water, and so on. The Blessed One, in sutras such as the *Descent into Lanka Sutra*, said that because the entities of cause and effect are prohibited, examples such as the balance scale should be understood as the entities of cause and effect being merely conventional. Furthermore, if someone says that the Blessed One said, "When this exists, this arises," thereby abandoning three kinds of conceptualization and only accepting the fourth kind, then it should be said to them: Does this teaching, "When this exists, this arises," by itself show the abandonment of three aspects and the acceptance of the fourth aspect? Or is it by reason? If you say it is by teaching, then it is not reasonable, because even shadows, sprouts, and lamps and light that exist simultaneously do not contradict the expression, "When there is a lamp, light arises." Thus, this sound only shows that the existence of a result depends on the existence of a cause, but it does not mean that there is a result without a cause. If things are established as momentary in ultimate reality by another valid cognition, then such an understanding will occur, but not by teaching. Nor is it by worldly reputation, for in the world, shadows, sprouts, and so on, which exist simultaneously, are also known as cause and effect. Or is it the way to establish it by reason? If so, then the words of the Blessed One should not be cited, because they are not the source for this meaning. If only reason must be stated, then it cannot be stated either, for just as the three kinds of conceptualization are impossible by reason, so too is the fourth kind impossible in ultimate reality, as has already been explained extensively. In order to abandon the views of those who transcend reputation and grasp at a permanent substance such as self, and qualities such as independence, and who also eliminate the conventional, such as the connection between actions and their results, the Blessed One taught dependent origination.
