Conversely, even if there are no other meat-eaters, etc., or some people living in distant places, there will be doubt about their non-existence. If they do not exist, then non-existence becomes a matter of arbitrary desire, such as the "འབྲ་གོ" fruit that arises from a place with the custom of taking minor wives. If there is no custom of taking minor wives, it is as if it does not exist. However, if one thinks that doubt will not arise because it is specifically emphasized that other things are capable of being its cause, that is not reasonable, because the particularity of other things being capable as its cause has not been established, because this is precisely the occasion for what needs to be proven. If there is doubt about causes and effects, in order to ascertain that, if it is said that the cause has a special ability that has not been established through wisdom, how can the wise ascertain it? Because with regard to the accompanying and reversing practices related to this, and anything else that can establish its particularity, there is no certainty about the entity of its cause, and this also leads to the fault of endlessness. Even if it exists and its existence has been established, just as co-occurring things are different in nature, what can prevent one from doubting that it may also arise from other things? It is not reasonable to determine that it does not exist simply because it has not been seen, because this would lead to very absurd conclusions. For those who can see this shore, what can determine that it does not arise from other things? Because no one can clearly see everything completely. If it also arises from other things, then the difference in causes would not be considered a difference. But that is not the case, because that would lead to the consequence that things with dissimilar essence and characteristics that co-occur could also not produce it. If it is said that only different characteristics will combine with co-occurring conditions, but not merely with the result, that is also not correct, because the characteristics are not different from it in ultimate meaning. If it is said that it can also be produced through parts, that is also not correct, because one thing has no parts. If it is said that characteristics are approximated as distinctions of opposites, therefore it is not reasonable to think of them as both the same and different, then they are not acting on the characteristics, because no inference can

Because that is impossible. Only the collection can generate and differentiate, but not each individual separately, which is also unreasonable. Because without the collection, the collection cannot be established, so it must be admitted that each collection is a cause. Therefore, from the ultimate point of view, there is no प्रमाण(pramāṇa, प्रमाण, प्रमाण) whatsoever to prove the existence of cause and effect. The teachers merely describe the establishment of cause and effect according to how cause and effect appear in the conventional truth, through the ways of accordance and opposition, but we should understand that this is not the view of the ultimate truth. Therefore, for the time being, there is no प्रमाण(pramāṇa, प्रमाण, प्रमाण) whatsoever to prove that the nature of impermanence is truly established in the ultimate truth. Because sound and other things conjectured by other things are not प्रमाण(pramāṇa, प्रमाण, प्रमाण), and things that are not प्रमाण(pramāṇa, प्रमाण, प्रमाण) are all included in these two प्रमाण(pramāṇa, प्रमाण, प्रमाण). Similarly, there is no प्रमाण(pramāṇa, प्रमाण, प्रमाण) that can prove that the nature of permanence is truly established. For example, it cannot be proven by direct perception, for the same reason as before, because consciousness with aspects and so on cannot grasp it. Nowhere do permanent things, such as the self, appear to the mind of direct perception as they are conjectured from the edge of their own establishment. If it is the object of the mind of direct perception, then merely because of its existence, it means that it always exists, because there is nothing else that can distinguish it, because it does not depend on other things, and a non-cause cannot be an object either. Even if it is inferred through its consciousness that it is the nature of being known, then its consciousness must also be permanent, the same as itself. Because if it follows the nature of being known, then it will also follow. If it is not so, it cannot follow the nature of being known, because what it knows itself depends on it. It cannot be proven by inference either, because it and any sign have no simultaneously established connection. For example, for the time being, the result
