Thus, even without having studied the treatises on the definition of valid cognition, even cowherd women and the like can, without instruction, infer fire and the like by seeing signs such as smoke. Therefore, we too should engage in that very reality. Likewise, there is no fault in thoroughly engaging in inference and the like through the means of conventional language. Furthermore, when engaging in inference and the like through conventional language, for those who wish to establish the nature of things that possess qualities such as impermanence, it is undoubtedly necessary to have conventionally existent subjects and the like. For without such a basis, it is impossible to establish that only the thing to be proven exists. If there is no such basis, then because the thing to be proven is obstructed, the fault of the unestablished basis is stated. Moreover, if only the subject itself is reversed, then it is undoubtedly the case that if the thing to be proven and so forth does not exist, the obstruction of what would not arise is prevented. If that is not established, then the fault of the unestablished reason and so forth is stated. However, even if some arbitrarily imputed subject is reversed, there is no obstruction of anything to be proven and so forth. For such a case, it is not appropriate to state the fault of the unestablished and so forth, because there is no obstruction to the accomplishment of the desired meaning. For those who do not wish to establish the nature of things that possess qualities, but only wish to state the mere establishment of distinguishing imputed qualities, it is not necessary to have a conventionally existent subject, because that is not its quality. Even in relation to that, it is not reasonable to be its subject. Even if that is not established, if there is nothing to be proven, then there is no obstruction to the accomplishment of the meaning that is manifestly desired as the reason for that not arising. Because the opponent seeks to harm the accomplishment of the meaning that the proponent manifestly desires, the opponent seeks whether the subject is established or not established, but not out of attachment. For those who speak of the unestablished subject and so forth, there is no harm to the meaning that the opponent manifestly desires to accomplish.

What is the point of discussing something that is simply without fault? Merely stating that the speaker is without fault is enough to fall into a state filled with the dust of inverted faults, but this is not the case for other situations. Therefore, in order to realize the dharma that accords with the dharma to be established, in the context of the definition of a proposition, those who understand reason particularly state "one's own tenet." Like this, if anything does not simultaneously manifest all its own results, then it is not unimpeded in power, constant, or of a single essence, like the son of a barren woman, etc. Those who want to manifest the tenets of others, such as space, also state that they do not observe that pervasiveness does not simultaneously accomplish results such as sound. Some say that this reason is not contradictory, because just as what is to be established and what establishes it, it also establishes that dharmas such as space are not the nature of entities, so this reason is also unestablished. In response to this, even if it has already been refuted here that dharmas such as space are entities, there is no harm in merely considering what is to be established as a distinction. The nature of the reason as merely a distinction is also not unestablished, because even if it is not a dharma entity, those two are established. Therefore, in order to dispel wrong conceptions, if only the dharma that accords with oneself is harmed, then that is the prevention of what is to be established, but it is not a subject that possesses other dharmas. When this is shown, the self-accepted, the directly perceived, the inferred, the trustworthy, and the renowned are not refuted, and merely showing one's own nature is one's own subject. Here, in the context of the nature of the proposition, the teacher speaks of one's own subject, as explained in the commentary. The nature of all debaters, what is the dharma that is to be established? There is harm to that which possesses that dharma, but not to the subject of other dharmas. Otherwise, even if there is harm to other dharmas, what is prevented for this? After explaining this extensively, in order to dispel wrong conceptions,
