For example, a potter, from a single mass of clay composed of collections of minute particles, through the combination of the labor of hands, wheel, water, and string, makes various kinds of vessels. Likewise, the Tathagatas, the great wise ones, like potters, teach the Dharma of no-self, the very nature of all Dharmas being completely reversed, through various skillful means of method and wisdom, with different letters and words, in a way that approaches the essence, or in a way that approaches no-self. Thus it is said. This Suchness, although it is not to be expressed in all ways, yet because of the power of convention, it is the nature of all conditioned phenomena, therefore it is also designated as 'conditioned.' Whether the Tathagatas appear or do not appear, because it exists at all times, it is also taught as 'unconditioned.' This Suchness is the nature that transcends all entities, therefore it is not the entity of either of the two. Without a doubt, it must be understood to be like that. If it is not like that, according to your system, how can the unconditioned become a real entity? Because you assert that only the conditioned is a real entity. Also, in the Noble Jewel Source Sutra it says: 'Whoever divides Suchness, into two kinds, conditioned and unconditioned, the Sugata teaches this Dharma, not for the sake of making them understand.' Thus it is said. Therefore, like this, holding onto the reality of the conditioned and the unconditioned is an extreme clinging. Or, the sphere of activity of the Hearers and Solitary Buddhas is in terms of the self-nature of reality, and it is said that the sphere of activity of the wisdom of the noble ones is real only for the sake of completely abandoning the place of fear for children. But the wisdom of the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas is a sphere of activity that is far beyond the world, and the self-nature of the ultimate reality is not existent, because its object is all Dharmas without arising, without ceasing, and so forth, therefore it is free from the extremes of existence and non-existence. As it is said in the Sutra: 'What is transcendent wisdom? It is the self of the Hearers and Solitary Buddhas.'
