All things are the very nature of existence. If seen as they are, all will be seen as they are. Because all dharmas are empty, there is no purification from all afflictions. They are not as they appear to be, nor are they non-existent. Thus it is said. This shows that if all dharmas are empty, then one would fall into the fault of slandering all afflictions and purification. Moreover, in that (sutra) it is said: What is meaningful is not the mind itself, seeing external objects is wrong. For those who look with reason, the grasped and the grasper will cease. Just as children discriminate, external objects do not exist. The mind obscured by habitual tendencies strongly appears as objects. Thus it is said. In the Noble Ten Bhumi Sutra, it is also said: For example, these three realms are only mind. Thus it is said. Similarly, in the Noble Samdhinirmocana Sutra, the Lankavatara Sutra, the Ghanavyuha Sutra, and others, because all dharmas are shown to be of the nature of mind-only, only mind is ultimately existent, and others are not, thus it will be shown. Therefore, all dharmas will not be established as being without self-nature. In the Noble Ratnakuta Sutra, it is also said: Light-protected one says permanent, this is one extreme. Light-protected one says impermanent, this is the second extreme. Light-protected one says it exists thus, this is one extreme. Light-protected one says it does not exist, this is the second extreme. What is in the middle of these two extremes? It is that which never exists, does not abide, has no appearance, has no discrimination, has no dwelling place. This is the correct and distinct understanding of the Middle Way of all dharmas. Thus it is said. This shows that there is a truly existent alaya-vijnana, endowed with qualities such as being inexpressible, and is free from the two extremes of permanence and annihilation. Speaking of the power of that (alaya-vijnana), in the Noble Cloud of Jewels Sutra, it is also said: Son of good family, if the ultimate truth does not exist, then the meaning of pure conduct will become meaningless. Thus it is said. In the Noble Ratnakuta Sutra itself, those who slander the truly existent alaya-vijnana and manifest all dharmas as emptiness.
