Regarding the nature of things, that which is desired to be expressed is considered the nature. Among the two ways, either simultaneously or gradually, there is no other function of words. For example, from the colors of a variegated object, one grasps the color as desired. Likewise, since things are diverse, understand them as neither different nor non-different. Thus it is said. It is unreasonable for diverse objects to appear as non-diverse consciousnesses, because they do not conform to those objects and therefore do not apprehend them. Those who follow the view of the supreme among gods say: In the aggregation of earth and so forth, everything is established as objects and faculties. Whoever desires this, even in their system, there is no conformity and entry with a single entity. The cause of establishing as an aggregation is not the possessor of aggregation, therefore it is unreasonable for the consciousness that apprehends the aggregation to enter in accordance with one. Speaking from the perspective of Samkhya: Courage and so forth, words like 'I', etc., even in a direction, appear as having one meaning. Consciousness is not reasonable, because the nature of the three appears as the object. If it is said that the object does not appear solely as the nature of the three, but rather whichever aspect of courage and so forth is greater, that is what is focused on, and not the others, that is also not permissible. Due to the differences in lineage and cultivation, on one thing such as sound, many experience suffering, despondency, aging, and so forth. If the portion of the two qualities is small, how can this experience be manifestly and fully accomplished? If it is asserted that due to the power of non-appearance and so forth, the nature of the remainder is not seen, this is also said to be extremely unreasonable. The nature of things has three aspects; if it is only one aspect, and if it appears inconsistent with that, then how can one desire to apprehend it? If it enters in accordance with the nature of how the object exists, then consciousness will apprehend the object, otherwise, like another meaning, the object that is desired will not become an object, because sound and so forth are the nature of the three, while consciousness enters in accordance with the nature of one, and therefore does not enter in accordance with it. Some secret ones say that even without external objects, diverse appearances are constant. It is extremely difficult for consciousness to arise either simultaneously or gradually. In the system of those who say this, multiplicity is also easy. For example, blue and yellow...

The consciousness that appears simultaneously in various forms becomes multiple, just like the nature of those forms, because it is not different from the various forms. The appearance of forms, sounds, and so on in sequence also cannot exceed these two arguments and metaphors to become multiple. Otherwise, how can these two be said to be one, and that would be the same as the previous fault. There is another fault in the aspect of sequence: if one considers a single form to be knowable, then because that form and consciousness are not different, the nature of that consciousness, or like the desired form, the previous and subsequent forms will also become knowable, because those two also exist. If someone says that the knowledge that grasps space and the cessation by discrimination, etc., which are said to exist conventionally, will not appear as diverse, then it cannot be said that way either. Space and other cognitions are merely appearances in name only; because many letters appear, they appear clearly as diverse. Apart from the image of conceptual thought related to names, even the slightest indivisible essence cannot be seen on it. That promise should also be stated. If there exists a consciousness that does not appear as diverse, it cannot be truly established, because harm is seen to what has characteristics. Because harm is seen to what has characteristics, and because its characteristics have been refuted, it cannot be established in any way. It is the same in all aspects. Therefore, the consciousness that appears as diverse exists in all forms; it should not reasonably be a single nature like diverse forms. This is the conclusion of the section. Furthermore, it is said here: fingers and knuckles are not different; there is no non-difference; if that is not established, knuckles, etc., do not exist; therefore, even a collection does not exist. Through the collection and the fingers, etc., related to the collection, it is shown that all things do not exist; there is no atom apart from the collection. In that way, where should one investigate wisdom for what knows a single meaning? How can the mind and mental factors, together with the collection of the mind, become a single object of focus? All those of white intelligence who rely on the tenets of their own Mind-Only school, consciousness is the ripening of similar habitual patterns.
