Commentary on the Ornament of the Middle Way By Shantarakshita Commentary on the Ornament of the Middle Way By Shantarakshita In Sanskrit: Madhyamaka-alamkara-vrtti. In Tibetan: Commentary on the Ornament of the Middle Way. Homage to youthful Manjushri! Those who, relying on wisdom, reside on the ground, have seen the other shore of the profound Dharma like an ocean. Especially those who have cultivated devotion and possess great minds, I constantly pay homage to those residing gurus. To accomplish the complete benefit of oneself and others, proceeding without seeking anything, not examining the nature of things, delighting in solitude, like all images and so forth, if one truly realizes the absence of inherent existence, then one will abandon all afflictions and cognitive obscurations. Therefore, to understand that all the teachings of reason and scripture are without inherent existence, one should strive diligently. Among these, scripture enters through the power of things and contradicts inference, so even those who follow with faith are not completely satisfied, therefore reason should be explained. These things spoken of by oneself and others, in reality, are devoid of the nature of one and many, therefore they are without inherent existence, like images. If there were inherent existence, it would not deviate from one or the other. These are the characteristics of dwelling by mutually excluding each other, therefore they eliminate other aggregates. The aggregates and the self, etc., spoken of by one's own school and by outsiders, in reality, do not exist, one should clearly understand their lack of inherent existence. Do not think that this reasoning is not established! Since the results are sequentially connected, permanent things are not of a single nature. If each result is different, then they will degenerate from the permanent. The things accepted by one's own school and others, if they dwell as permanent or different, and in the aggregates of the two, among these, the former, by generating sequential results, joy and suffering, etc., should not be sequential and of a single nature, because their results will also occur simultaneously. If the results are missing because the cause is incomplete, when the power of the cause is unobstructed, how could there be any missing? If there is missing

It is because it follows what it has, and does not act against it. How could these become its fruit? In particular, those that cannot be changed, relying on the co-operative cause is unreasonable, which is very clear. Furthermore, at the time of producing the fruit, whether it is the co-operative condition or the existing object, if it is thought that it is also the same when it is separated from the co-operative cause, then because it merely follows it, at that time the co-operative conditions are also drawn and remain by force as if hanging from the neck, and the continuity of the fruit will not be cut off, it will become irreversible. This refutes those who say that the co-operative cause itself is expressed as the sound of ability, and that its sequence produces the sequence of the fruit. If it is said that this fault will occur, for the sequential fruits, their natures are different and sequential, then the attachment to their permanence should be abandoned, because each fruit will cause the previous and subsequent natures to perish and arise. If someone in one's own sect says that the object of consciousness arising from the power of meditation alone is different from all the aspects of conditioned phenomena, and that for the mind that only focuses on itself, there is no need for the unconditioned, because only the unconditioned is the object of knowledge, therefore it is truly existent, according to their view, there is no contradiction in being only a single nature, if it is said like this, there is a contradiction, like this: The knowledge arising from meditation, the knowable is said to be unconditioned, in their system they are also not single, because they are related to sequential knowledge. Because they are object and subject, those that are related to sequential consciousness, will they not become a single nature? No, like this: If the previous consciousness follows the nature of the knowable, then the previous consciousness will also become the subsequent, and the subsequent will also become the previous. If it is not like that, then the nature of the unconditioned that is known by the previous consciousness also exists in the subsequent time, but the previous consciousness does not exist, similarly, what is known by the subsequent consciousness exists in the previous, but the subsequent consciousness does not exist, this will become a fault. If the subsequent consciousness
