I, it is in accordance with all that comes from the Sutra Unraveling the Intentions and others. As the Lankavatara Sutra says: "External forms do not exist; one's own mind appears as the external world." I think that this statement is not well explained. Even those whose power of intelligence is not small and who are especially diligent in practice, if they examine that mind as being of one or many natures, they will not see its essence in the ultimate sense, so it is not a true understanding. Therefore, by relying on mind-only, one should realize that external objects are unreal. By relying on this method, one should also realize the extreme absence of self in it. By relying on the method of mind-only, one effortlessly realizes that what is desired outside of the mind, which is associated with similarities, such as the example of self and what belongs to self, the apprehended and the apprehender, etc., are without inherent existence. Although this method makes it possible to realize that the mind is without inherent existence because it does not arise from itself, if one realizes this Middle Way that abandons all extremes, then because it is free from the nature of one and many, it is very easy to realize that it is without inherent existence. Therefore, in the chapter on transcendence of the world, it says: "O sons of the Victorious Ones, furthermore, the three realms are realized as being only mind, and the three times are also realized as being the same as mind. That mind is also understood to be without beginning or end." This statement is well explained, because it is without beginning or end, since there is no beginning of birth and death, nor a middle of the nature of abiding. The Sutra of the Collection of True Dharmas also says: "Bhagavan, all dharmas are the essence of what is imputed, appearing as mind-only, without any real substance, like an illusion without a root." The Lankavatara Sutra also says: "Relying on mind-only, one does not conceptualize external objects. Abiding in the true object, one also strongly rejects mind-only. Having rejected mind-only, one also strongly rejects the absence of appearance. The yogi who abides in the absence of appearance sees the Great Vehicle. Entering into it is spontaneously accomplished and peaceful, purified by aspirations. Supreme wisdom, without self, is not seen in the absence of appearance." Again, it says: "Cause and condition are reversed, and cause is also definitely prevented, and the establishment of mind-only is clearly taught as unborn. Things

External objects are unreal, and the mind is also completely unattainable. Because of abandoning all views, it is the nature of unborn. Thus it is said. Here it is also said: In this, there is no birth whatsoever, nor is there any cessation. Birth and cessation are only knowing. The arising of life and so on are completely contained in consciousness. If it can be separated by knowing, isn't it a reversed distinction? Thus it is said. Whoever rides the chariot of the two modes, holding the reins of wisdom, they therefore, as they are, obtain the nature of the Great Vehicle. Those who enter into following after entering by the power of things, are gathered by stating the two modes. The Tathagatas depart, and the Great Vehicle that follows after the departure, understands that all things are without self-nature. Like those who ride in a great chariot, like holding the reins of restraint well, they truly obtain the Great Vehicle that has meaning. In the Lankavatara Sutra, the Great Vehicle, which is summarized by the two modes, is briefly shown as follows: the five dharmas and the three self-natures, the eight consciousnesses and the objects of the two selflessnesses, all the Great Vehicle is contained in this. Thus it appears. These two modes are explained in many ways by All-pervading, Not-good-eyes, and so on. What is the difference in this Great Vehicle? Thus, it is shown in the secret of the nectar drops: Only consciousness is always extremely pure, thus the Buddha is always liberated. It is speculated that there is no taking and abandoning, Brahma always dwells in the place without sorrow. Thus it is said. It appears from the fifth stage: It has transcended mere names, abandoned existence and non-existence, and is definitely liberated from extraction and collection. That is called the son of the wealth god. There is no self-nature in existence, and there is no self-nature in non-existence either. Liberated from existence and non-existence, whoever knows that, that is the difference of wisdom. Thus it is said. It appears from the peaceful adornment: The only son Brahma is the most true, the power of wisdom is limitless, only speaking of what exists, that is also said to be destroyed. Thus it is said. It is spoken from the union of father and son. The great sage Kapila.
