In complete purity. Just as the appearance of an image is without inherent existence, so should you understand this Dharma of trees. What I have said about the emptiness of inherent existence, contemplate it as emptiness. Those with childish, inverted minds, who do not understand the emptiness of inherent existence, for the sake of teaching them, the Sugata teaches emptiness of inherent existence. Generated by the conceptualization of complete imputation, bound by the conceptualization of non-reality. Thus it is said. Also in the Lankavatara Sutra: Abandoning oneness and otherness, form is like a reflection in a mirror, although it appears, it is not there. Likewise is the nature of things. Thus it is taught. Because of what does it become like that? Therefore, these things are, only of the nature of conventional truth. If these desire reality, what shall I do for them? By the reasoning that has been spoken, all things are unbearable to examine, therefore, if not examined, they are delightful, of the nature of self-nature, like illusory elephants, horses, and people, etc. If, in that way, all things not created by others, desire to definitely grasp their nature, what shall I prevent for them? They have made the nature of things their own, but this is without any hook of desire by anyone, therefore, there is no establishment for these. The Tathagatas, who are skilled in the suchness of things as they abide, have well explained them in this and that. In the Sutra of the Collection of All Dharmas, it is said: Bodhisattvas, Tathagatas, Arhats, Perfectly Awakened Buddhas, etc., should comprehend the ten types of expressions they teach. What are the ten? They are: teaching aggregates, teaching elements, teaching sources, teaching sentient beings, teaching actions, teaching birth, teaching aging, teaching death, teaching the connection of death, and teaching the Nirvana that pacifies them. Thus it is said. Therefore, in the Jewel Cloud Sutra, it is also said: Son of lineage, if you possess ten qualities, Bodhisattvas are skilled in conventional truth. What are the ten? They are: likewise, they also establish form, but in ultimate truth, they do not perceive form, nor do they

There is no strong attachment. Similarly, feelings, perceptions, volitions, and consciousness are also extensively explained. Therefore, in the teachings of the Noble Inexhaustible Intellect, it is also said: 'Properly' means that all phenomena are without self; similarly, all phenomena can be seen with reason. Just as sentient beings are without self, so too can all phenomena be seen with reason. In the Sutra of Generating Buddhas, the Buddha also said: 'Because of the emptiness of characteristics, up to and including consciousness, it is empty by the very nature of consciousness.' If someone says, 'This is emptiness by the nature of what is examined,' that is true, but the thing that possesses true nature also exists, and that is only the nature of what is examined. If the self-nature of other-dependence is established as truly existing, then the examination of duality and so on is established, but if that is established, then the harm of the previously mentioned valid cognition (Pramana) exists, so that is not established. In the Elephant Strength Sutra, it is also said: 'Shariputra, what do you think? Does the one who knows the nature of all phenomena exist, or does he not exist?' He replied: 'Bhagavan, the one who seeks the nature of all phenomena is seeking the nature of illusion. Bhagavan, that does not exist, it is not existent.' Why is that? Because the Bhagavan has taught that all phenomena are the nature of illusion, and whatever is like illusion does not exist. For example, seeking the nature of all phenomena is a non-existent seeking. Why is that? Because in this, nothing can be truly identified.' And so on are explained. So, if this conventional nature is not truly existent, if it is not truly existent, then it contradicts the function of what is seen and desired. To show that this is not the case, (the text says:) 'The experience of being unexamined and alone is delightful, possessing the nature of arising and ceasing, functioning through various abilities, its nature is understood to be conventional truth.' Conventional truth is not defined merely by verbal expression, but the things that are seen and desired, the things that arise in dependence on conditions, cannot be examined. Again
