Attachment to existence and fear of emptiness are the two extremes of permanence and annihilation. Having abandoned these two, by examining the ultimate truth, one abandons the extreme of permanence; by acknowledging the conventional, one abandons the extreme of annihilation. Therefore, abiding in samsara is accomplished through the Middle Way: with wisdom, one is not stained by the faults of existence; with compassion, it is for the sake of suffering beings. Then, if there is no suffering in the ultimate truth, what is the use of abiding? It is said: Because ignorance conventionally fixates on sentient beings. Therefore, although one abides with compassion, one is not stained by the faults of existence with wisdom. That emptiness itself is the result, which is the non-abiding nirvana, the result of emptiness. Briefly summarized and explained: According to the reasoning explained in this way, the fault of abiding only in existence due to fear does not fall into the side of emptiness. Therefore, without hesitation, one should meditate on selflessness. To the question of what is the use of seeing emptiness, the answer is: For the sake of afflictions and so on. Afflictions such as desire, and only the obscuration of knowledge, these are darkness, because they obscure the ultimate truth. Emptiness is the cause of abandoning these, therefore, wanting to quickly attain the state of omniscient wisdom, why not meditate on emptiness? One should strive to meditate. To the fear of emptiness that has been spoken of, the answer is given: To things and so on. One should fear things that cause suffering. Emptiness pacifies the suffering of existence, therefore why fear what is not a place of fear? One should only rejoice in the cause of all qualities. Furthermore, it is said that fear arises from self-grasping, for those who do not understand suchness. For example, "if" and so on. Let alone fearing any cause of fear, if the self becomes the object of pride, then fear will arise. When, through examination, the word "self" is nothing other than language and conceptual thought, upon whom will fear descend? At that time, through examination, fear will cease. It is said: "The self does not come now, nor will it go; mine does not come now, nor will it go; therefore children will be afraid, but fear is exhausted for the wise." Thus it is said.

This is analyzed and explained in three verses, namely teeth, etc. If it is not self, then it is not the cause and object of self. The nose is produced from the nose. Phlegm is sputum. Pus is congealed blood. Self, namely fat, etc., is easy to understand. Tendons connect bone joints. Heat is of the body. Wind is exhaling and inhaling, etc. The nine apertures are two ear holes, two eyes, nostrils, mouth and excretory place, and the urinary opening. The six consciousnesses are the six: eye consciousness, ear consciousness, nose consciousness, tongue consciousness, body consciousness, and mind consciousness. In short, neither individually nor collectively is it self. Like teeth, etc., the nature of the collection, what the body refers to, is not an object for the separate self-grasping conceptual thought, because it is not self. The collection is also merely those, and for those, it is impossible to be just one, because it would cause obstruction. Grasping many as one is also not without error. For error, there is not that itself either. Therefore, this is merely conceptual thought. The realm of activity of the wise person, self. Measuring with reason, that desire is also unreasonable, because the self, yellow, possessing happiness, one-eyed, etc., exists on the body. Those who say that the nature of mind is self, such as the Samkhya school, say that the nature of the six consciousnesses is self, and this is answered. If sound, etc. If the nature of sound consciousness is self, then because it is permanent, sound consciousness will also become permanent. At that time, sound should always be perceived when it exists and does not exist. Even so, knowledge is close to conceptual thought, and sound is occasional, so it is not clear that it always exists, if you say so. The answer is, knowable, etc. When it does not exist, because there is no sound, what is known? Even if the knowable is empty, it is called knowledge. These two are explained. If not knowing the object is also knowledge, then a tree would also become knowledge. That is not, and similarly, others are not said to be so. For what reason is it not knowledge without an object? Because of that, the knowable becomes distant, so knowledge is also definitely non-existent. If only the knowledge of sound is self, then because it is the nature of grasping, it will not grasp form.
