At this time, it is said, "Beyond the mind," and so on. Is illusion other than the mind? Is it not other? Is it in the manner of both? Or is it not in the manner of both? These are the four possibilities. Among them, it is not other, because it is established as only mind. If it is not other, then regarding that, "When you have illusion," and so on, faults are pointed out. Since two mutually contradictory things cannot exist as one, there is no way for both to exist. Based on the four possibilities, it is said, "Beyond the mind," and so on. Illusion is beyond the mind. By not being other, it prevents being other. It is also not not other, so it prevents being that itself. Preventing both is unreasonable, because they exist by mutually abandoning each other. Without making the two enter as one, it is impossible to make the other return, so there is no place where they exist as one. That is explained: "Entering and returning, those two alone together, those two together preventing, from all, in every way, it is not understood." So it is said. Furthermore, if illusion is a thing, how is it not other than the mind? If it is not other, then at that time, only the mind is illusion, so it is not truly existent. It is only mind. "When you have illusion, if there is nothing, then what is the object?" Only this now arises. Thus, in four ways, illusion does not exist. Even though it does not exist, it is an object of grasping for the ignorant. In this way, you should also know that the mind is the grasper. What is the use of fabricating something that is truly existent, then destroying oneself with it? It is summarized and explained: "How," and so on. Like the elephant and so on conjured by a magician, even though there is no cause, how does it become visible? In the same way, the mind is the seer. Even though it is not truly existent, the object becomes visible. With that, "When delusion is not present," and so on, what was said is established. Again, speaking to the Mind-Only proponent who believes in true existence, "If," and so on. Since the basis of all defilement and purification is the mind, this cycle of existence that relies on the mind, is it a thing? Or is it not a thing? Is the thing also the mind? Or is it other than that? If the mind alone is a thing, then at that time, what is other than the mind that relies on it is not the cycle of existence. Since the mind is also naturally clear light, it is the nature of purification, not something to be abandoned.
