The illusory appearances taken as forms such as elephants are not present in the Mind-Only school. This is because they are asserted to be Mind-Only. At that time, it is unreasonable for the appearance of what is apprehended, the determination of direction, etc., to appear as distinct from the individual consciousness. Why is it explained? Because there is no completely imputed nature here. Only the dependent arising exists. For those who say that only the mind exists, there is no abandonment of the two extremes. Because the completely imputed external object does not exist, it is the extreme of annihilation. Because the individual consciousness that is controlled by afflictions exists, it is the extreme of permanence. Therefore, one should abandon the view that the individual consciousness exists ultimately. If one says that even though the external object does not exist, only the aspect of the mind other than the aspect of the grasper exists ultimately, that is unreasonable because the Mind-Only is an illusion, so when the ultimate existence is not established in the Madhyamaka, how can its other aspects be ultimately established? If that is not established, what is the object to be grasped, and by what is the grasper seen? Because the subject is not established, the predicate is not established. Others say: Then, the self-aware wisdom is self-aware, and the illusory appearance that is not different from it is also known, so there is no fault in what was said earlier. The answer is: It is called the world, etc. In the Sutra Requested by Jewel Peak, it says: He searches for the continuum of the mind, and the following arises in it: If there is an object, the mind arises. Then, is the mind also directed towards another, and is the object also another? Wherever the object is, that is the mind. If the object is also another and the mind is also another, then there will be two minds. If the object is what it is, that is the mind, then how is it that the mind itself does not see the mind? The edge of the sword itself cannot cut itself, the tip of the finger itself cannot touch itself, and so on. This meaning is: How the appearance of the world is used, there is the appearance of grasper and grasped, and that also arises from ignorance and is mutually dependent. It is also said in the Perfection of Wisdom: Only with an object does the mind arise, but not without an object. With an object, karma arises, but not without an object. Therefore, the statement that the mind does not see itself is not established by scripture, nor is it established by the appearance of the world, and by reason

It also cannot be established. Furthermore, the mind is conventional conceptualization, because there is no other samsara apart from conceptualization, so although one wants to be liberated, one falls into samsara. The Mind-Only school explains with an example to establish self-awareness: Just as a lamp illuminates a vase and other things in the darkness, does self-awareness also appear in this way? The answer is: The lamp is not to be illuminated like a vase and other things, because it is not obscured by darkness. What is obscured is to be illuminated, like a vase and other things. The lamp is not obscured, because there is no lamp in the darkness, so what does it illuminate? There is no darkness in the lamp, so what does it illuminate? Others say that only that which appears without depending on others is stated, such as crystal. Just as crystal itself is not blue but makes blue appear, depending on blue leaves and other things, so it is not a thing of intrinsic blue. Similarly, some things like vases depend on others, while lamps and the like are said to appear without dependence. The answer is: It is not blue itself, and so on. This example is also not similar, because blue is not independent of blue itself, but depends on its own cause. If it were born not blue, and without depending on others, it would make itself blue, then it would happen, but it is not so, because, as before, it is contradictory for oneself to make oneself. What was said, "From the nature of non-consciousness, it arises completely reversed," etc., also does not establish self-awareness, because what is made is like an image without self-nature. One does not have self-nature, and non-consciousness is not established, so from what does it turn away? Therefore, after the lamp itself has taken the function of illuminating, it is said that it is unreasonable for the mind itself to illuminate, like lamps and so on. Let alone the self-nature of the lamp illuminating, even so, for the purpose of establishing self-awareness, the example is not similar, that is its meaning. Because the lamp illuminates, it is known and said through the knowledge that has the form of the lamp. Through what form or through what is knowledge known and said? This seems to be asking the other person. It is not through the first knowledge, because it has not yet arisen at that time. It will arise later.
