does. If it is not beneficial, then do not listen to him. At that time, being angry will lead to falling into evil destinies, because of hating beneficial things. When seeing others who are more intelligent, of higher caste, wealthier, etc., than oneself, one becomes jealous. Because one cannot bear the perfections of others. One argues with those who are equal to oneself. One becomes arrogant towards those who are inferior to oneself. If praised with existing and non-existing qualities, one becomes conceited. Hearing about one's faults, one becomes angry. Therefore, there is never any benefit for children. From one child, unwholesomeness will definitely arise for another child, praising oneself through hearing, etc., concealing others' hearing, etc., slandering by speaking of faults, speaking of the qualities of desire, speaking of words that delight in samsara, and so on. Like that, gathering with those other two, any unwholesomeness will definitely arise. Therefore, associating with children is meaningless and a futile gathering. Therefore, one should abandon the company of children and enjoy the happiness of being alone, which is the solitude of the body. Having a mind that is free from afflictions is the solitude of the mind. So, how should those who have attained the solitude of body and mind act when associating with children? Go far away from children and escape, so how can one not become involved with them? If one teaches without realizing it, then one should satisfy them with joyful behavior. Not for the sake of intimacy, but like not having attachment and anger, and not falling into either extreme. When walking in the village, only for the purpose of Dharma, take robes and alms, like a bee taking honey from a flower. Act without intimacy, as if one has never seen them before. It is taught to abandon attachment to gains, etc. Gains refer to monastic robes, etc. Respect is what is done by people. Being requested with respect by many people, fear arises from sudden death. It is taught that fear will not arise if one acts like this: wherever the mind happily conquers, wherever attachment arises, suffering itself will ripen a thousandfold. Therefore, the wise should not be attached to gains, etc. Because fear arises from desire. Furthermore, these gains, etc., are impermanent.

Because it is so, it will naturally decline, so the teachings should be examined. What is the use of clinging to the nature of decline? Like this, many who have gained and have fame have appeared before, even if they have appeared, because it is the nature of decline, where have the gains and fame gone, no one knows. Therefore, it is said that one should not be attached to gaining and not gaining, fame and not fame, happiness and suffering, praise and blame. If praised, why should I be happy? Because others slander me. If slandered, why should I be unhappy? Because others praise me. It is said that one cannot satisfy these people in order not to be slandered. Because sentient beings have various desires, even the Buddha cannot satisfy them, I do not understand, what more needs to be said? Therefore, abandon worldly thoughts. Furthermore, those who have not gained are reproached as not having accumulated merit, and those who have gained are ridiculed as having gained by deceiving others through improper conduct. Otherwise, do others have no merit? Did only he gain? How can one be happy with those who are naturally difficult to get along with? The Buddha said: Children will not be friends with anyone. Because if his own purpose is not achieved, he will not be happy. Because happiness comes from one's own purpose, that is not a friend. Just as one is unhappy because one has lost property only for one's own purpose, it is not because of the property, but because one's own happiness has been harmed. For the sake of seclusion of the body and so on, secluded places such as forests are taught. Because trees and so on do not slander, there is no need to try to please them by striving to act in accordance with them. May there be no situation where there is disagreement, difficulty in getting along, and difficulty in living together. In a deserted temple, or under a tree, or in a monastery, may I live as I please, without relying on anything, without a place of attachment, without looking back. On the side of a mountain or forest, no one owns it, it is not specially arranged, it is naturally wide, in accordance with the practice of emptiness, may I practice enlightenment with my own power, without object, and may I always abide. Possessing property of only the size of a clay bowl, because it is a duster for wiping away dust, it is clothing that thieves do not want.
