Slightly opening the eyes is to avoid distraction by looking down, which shows the view of meditation, that is, to practice the unwavering Suchness. If a beginner cannot do it, it is said for the sake of rest, that is, "view," and so on. To avoid eye and mental fatigue, one should sometimes look around. If someone approaches, then knowing only his shadow, one should say "Hello" and look at him, this is so that he does not lose faith. On the road, too, one should look and walk in this way, it is said to examine the danger. The cause of danger is robbers, etc., in order to know them, one should look briefly in four directions in turn, this is to protect oneself. If looking in all directions, one should sit and look. If looking behind, one should turn around and look. Walking forward and looking back, in this way, in all actions, whenever and wherever, one should know and do it. The mindfulness of the body is explained, that is, in any action, one should initiate thoughts such as "the body should abide in this way," and in the middle one should also observe how the body abides. The mindfulness of the mind is explained, that is, merely thinking of the Dharma that benefits oneself and others is extremely difficult, therefore one should bind it, so that it becomes autonomous. Even if it is bound, one should observe, that is, observe whether it is on one's own object or elsewhere, one should pull it back from elsewhere and place it on one's own object. Let it naturally and continuously remain calm there. Just like the meditation that was started, one should not give up even for a moment, one should grasp it in this way. Because discipline is to be purified by Samadhi. The *Moon Lamp Sutra* says, "If one obtains Samadhi, discipline will be quickly purified," and so on. It is said to abandon mindfulness, that is, because there are dangers such as fire, and celebrations such as offerings to the Three Jewels, if one cannot meditate, one should act as one pleases during that time. Why is that so? Because discipline is more important than generosity, if one cannot do it, even if one remains calm during that time, there is no downfall. The *Inexhaustible Intellect Sutra* says, "For the sake of those who have come from afar to listen to the Dharma, one should rise from meditation and only praise the giving of Dharma," and so on. Even so, one should learn

It is said that one should not be lazy. Once one has decided what to do, one should complete meditation, etc. One should be single-minded about this and not abandon it for other things. What is the benefit of doing this? The answer is that doing so is good in every way. Conversely, both are not good, i.e., what was started before and what was promised later. In this way, one will enter unconsciously, and once entered, it will increase. Furthermore, if one develops a desire for various things such as the king's talk and wonderful things such as dances, one should destroy it. Furthermore, seeing the prohibition of pointlessly kneading clay, cutting grass with fingernails, drawing lines on the ground with feet, and actions included by the word "etc." such as rinsing the mouth and making things, one should fear its consequences and abandon it in that very moment. Seven verses explain how to maintain mindfulness, starting with "when," etc. First, examine your own mind and stabilize what is reasonable. When your own mind arises with attachment or hatred, do not do anything with the body or say anything bad, because you should recognize that both of these are afflictions. Gather the senses and discursive thoughts and abide in this. The meaning is that whatever motivation, such as desire, will naturally disappear, because they are not permanent. When agitation is distraction, arguing with others with words, pride is arrogance of mind, and being conceited, revealing others' faults is attacking each other with the body, wanting to deceive with these crooked supports. When praising oneself is to reveal one's own good qualities, slandering others is dissatisfaction, scolding is arguing out of anger, wanting to obtain wealth, respect, fame, and servants, service, abandoning the interests of others, pursuing one's own interests, retinue are disciples, etc., when wanting to say unreasonable things, being unable to bear it, being foolish, fear, arrogance, quibbling, and when a mind of attachment to one's own position arises, at that time do not do anything, abide like a tree. The antidote to this is explained, that after seeing all the afflicted mind in this way, again

When beginning to engage in meaningless activities, the cautious warrior should firmly grasp the antidote through vigilance and awareness. The Sutra Requested by Upali states: "Without heedlessness, closely establishing mindfulness is possessing awareness." The Compendium of Trainings also states: "Protecting oneself is abandoning what is meaningless. How are these obtained? By abandoning meaningless elaborations. These are always accomplished through mindfulness. Mindfulness arises greatly from faith. Faith is the nature of peace, and it arises through understanding and teaching." Thus it is said. Only the antidotes of three verses are explained. Being very certain is having firm vows. Having great faith is rejoicing in those with qualities. Steadfastness is fearlessness. Reverence is respect. It is said that it is done through the body and so forth. With shame and fear towards the Bhagavan. Being peaceful is subduing the senses. Making others happy through generosity and so forth. What one desires, another does not desire, therefore, not being annoyed by the conflicting desires of children. With the power of afflictions, thinking that these will happen in this way, and thus possessing compassion. For things that have nature and are without fault, always being under the control of nature, one should think of taking hold of the mind without arrogance, like an illusion. One should think moment by moment that one has obtained leisure after a long time. One should make the mind as stable as Mount Meru, unmoving by thoughts of desire and so on. Merely training the mind is the bodhisattva's training, and it is accomplished through this. The awareness of the body is explained. The body is inanimate, so it cannot accomplish the benefit of oneself and others. Otherwise, when vultures who are attached to flesh lead the body separated from the mind to each other, why don't they stop it? Because of abandoning the attachment of the mind, it is said: Alas! Mind, only by grasping as me with no self, why protect the mass of flesh and bones? Since this body is different from you, what harm does it do to you even if it decays? Since you do not understand the benefits and harms of different things and grasp them as me, why not grasp the very pure wooden statue? This is an impure illusion, a dharma of decay. It is said that there is no essence, with wisdom from one's own body
