It is to be destroyed by wisdom alone. Explaining the motivation: Even from a pleasing object, afflictions do not arise for those whose senses are subdued, because even if divided into minute particles, they are not seen, so afflictions are not in the object. Nor are they in the collection of senses. When discriminating dharmas, it is the same as before. Because it is not found, it is not in between the two either. It is not elsewhere either, because it harms all beings, so examining what is apparent is not found. Therefore, because there is no root, it is only adventitious, because it arises from improper attention. Even so, it harms all beings. If it is asked whether this contradicts "it abides in my mind," it does not, because that is said in reliance on latency. Here, the nature of motivation is explained, because it is non-existent, it is only an illusion. Just as even though there is no elephant, an illusion with the form of an elephant appears through the power of mantras and medicine. Likewise, afflictions also arise dependently. After examining what is pleasing, etc., delusion arises towards objects, and thoughts such as desire arise. That is also after recognizing what is displeasing. As it is said, abandon fear in your heart from afflictions. For the sake of wisdom, strive to realize suchness. What is the use of needlessly subjecting yourself to suffering in hell? Therefore, be sure to ascertain the meaning shown by this chapter and strive to accomplish the meaning of the precepts as taught. What is briefly shown here is for the sake of studying those precepts that are widely taught in the sutras, as it is said in the Compendium of Trainings: Oneself and all enjoyments, The virtues of the three times, Giving to all sentient beings, And increasing pure virtues and protection. If you do not act as the doctor advises, where will there be patients who are touched by medicine? Likewise, if you do not study the precepts taught by the all-knowing great physician, how will you be liberated from the disease of suffering such as birth? Mindfulness is diligence in guarding the mind that has arisen, and it is said so in the texts that show that meaning. The commentary on the meaning of the chapter on mindfulness is a special clarification.

End of the fourth chapter. The body that a Bodhisattva has relinquished should also be protected, purified, and increased. Why? For the sake of the enjoyment of sentient beings. Because if one gives away oneself and so on, there is no enjoyment if it is not protected. If there is no enjoyment, what is there to give? Therefore, for the sake of the enjoyment of all sentient beings, one should protect oneself and so on. Rely on virtuous spiritual friends, and always read the sutras. For those who wish to learn, one should protect the mind from the illusions of afflictions that are spoken of. Learning should also be made manifest, and should not be obstructed. So, is it sufficient to protect only learning? It is said: If one does not protect the mind that is wavering, intoxicated by afflictions, and not under control, one cannot protect learning. Why? Because even an intoxicated elephant that has not been tamed does not cause such harm, but an unprotected mind leads to hell. In this way, intoxication only leads to death, but the mind leads to great suffering even in future lives, and that is the difference. Having explained the qualities, by controlling it with the iron hook of the Tathagata's speech, and by preventing it from acting in all unfavorable directions with the rope of mindfulness that will be explained. If the elephant of the mind is bound, then all fear from afflictions will disappear, and one will gradually obtain goodness such as higher realms. So, even if the mind is seized, how can all fears disappear if tigers and so on are not bound? It is said: The two verses about tigers and so on are easy to understand. What is the reason for this? It is said: Because the fears and so on that arise are due to evil deeds done in the past. Otherwise, just as someone is struck by lightning and so on, it would happen to all sentient beings, or it would not happen to everyone, because there is no cause. Karma is also only the mind, because it produces the karma of the body and so on. In the Treasury of Knowledge (Abhidharmakosha) it says: The world is diverse, born from karma. That karma is born from thought and determination. Thought is the karma of the mind, and from it arise the karmas of body and speech. Because it is said like that. Why is it said like that? A sinful mind is evil, and there is no fear of enemies for beings. Whoever's mind is under control, that person will not be without happiness.
