It is a symbol of affliction. It should be held with mindfulness and examined with vigilance. It is like taking action quickly due to fear. Wisdom accompanied by mindfulness is here a symbol of mindfulness. The three verses beginning with "a little oil" are easy to understand. The phrase "meeting a virtuous friend" and so on, means if householders, or if they desire to obtain the cause of generosity and so on. What are those? It is what is said, "How" and so on. Having made power into the power of freedom, it is said, "Vigilant speech" and so on. Vigilant speech is what is said in the chapter on vigilance towards the mind of enlightenment. Vigilant speech is after remembering, in any case, before arising from action, how from action and so on, one should make vigilance enter into everything, just like that, one should be easy to satisfy oneself, and standing should also be moderate. Furthermore, just as after poison becomes blood, the body's weapon enters the wound, pervading the entire body. Similarly, once a hole is found, the afflictions of sentient beings will enter. The hole is the delusion of mindfulness. Just as the cottonwood flower goes, or coming is controlled by the wind, similarly, wealth is controlled by diligence and quickly accomplished. Diligence will be free. Thus, the collection of intelligence or other qualities will come. With meditation and wisdom as the main, equality of self and other, and exchange of self and other, are not discussed here. The chapter on the perfection of diligence from the well-spoken words of Entering the Bodhisattva's Way, that is, the seventh chapter. Having generated diligence in the manner described, what should be done? The mind should be placed in samadhi. Thus, the mind is a distracted person, in the fangs of afflictions, abiding in distraction from samadhi. Samadhi is one-pointedness. That also has three aspects, namely, inner placement, complete inner placement, and diligent inner placement. Among these three, here it is also said to be undistracted samadhi. Among them, taking inner placement as an example, the body abiding in a solitary place, is distraction.
