The conduct from the first bhumi to the seventh bhumi, as it appears in the Dasabhumika Sutra. Here, it is not written due to the abundance of words. Here, we seize the entry into the conduct of a Bodhisattva who has generated the mind of enlightenment. The purpose of entering, the method upon which to rely to enter, where to enter, and how to enter. These five are, in order, what one enters with, i.e., the two verses beginning with "leisure and opportunity"; the purpose of entering, i.e., in the first chapter, the one verse beginning with "fear and suffering"; in the sixth chapter, the teaching of equality between oneself and others; in the eighth chapter and so on, all of these, the one verse beginning with "also"; and again in the same chapter, the one verse beginning with "afflictions and obscurations of knowledge"; the method upon which to rely to enter, i.e., in the fourth chapter, from "always a virtuous friend" to "it should be taught below that"; where to enter, i.e., the generation of the mind of enlightenment and the nature of the six perfections, with all of its texts; how to enter, i.e., as taught by the second to fourth chapters. Furthermore, the conduct of enlightenment is the generation of the mind of enlightenment, the six perfections, the three vows, and the three trainings, etc. Entering into that is entering through the door of expressing it, entering through the door of understanding it, and entering through the door of practicing it. Here, we seize entering through the door of expressing it. How should it be expressed? From the first chapter to the second chapter, the generation of the mind of enlightenment is expressed. From the second chapter, from "Having done all these things in this way, may I also become a cause of sustenance" is expressing the perfection of generosity. From "How did the Sugatas of the past?" to the fourth chapter is expressing the perfection of ethics. The remaining four chapters express patience and so on in order. Among the three vows, from the perspective of establishing a general outline, vows, virtue, and benefiting sentient beings.

The discipline of guarding mindfulness is from the chapter on "Guarding Awareness." From "Jesting words are various" to "He abides like a tree," and the two verses beginning with "Intolerable laziness," and the one verse beginning with "Extremely certain," are all explained in order. Among them, in terms of the establishment of the Peaceful Mother, all six perfections, beginning with the generation of the mind of enlightenment, are the very nature of the discipline of vows because of their respective distinctiveness. Similarly, all are also dedicated as causes for great enlightenment, and because they directly and indirectly aim at the benefit of sentient beings, they are the very nature of the discipline of gathering virtuous dharmas and benefiting sentient beings. Therefore, it should be understood that all scriptures teach the three trainings of vows. In terms of the three trainings, the first four chapters teach the training of higher discipline, generosity is the cause of higher discipline, because abandoning the body and so on leads to discipline; taking and guarding vows is the very nature of the training of higher discipline. The fifth and seventh chapters teach the training of higher mind, because diligence is applied to attain forbearance of birth, thereby knowing the method of meditating on concentration. Patience and diligence are the cause of the training of higher mind, and concentration is its very nature. The eighth chapter teaches the training of higher wisdom. Therefore, this treatise is called "Entering the Bodhisattva's Way of Life" because it enters in the manner of speaking to those who have just begun to practice the bodhisattva's way of life. Among them, entering through the gate of understanding relies on this treatise itself, and is known by the listener. Afterwards, from the generation of the mind of enlightenment onwards, striving to practice as much as possible in the stage of the path of learning is called entering through the manner of actual practice. The title "Explaining the Benefits of the Mind of Enlightenment" is primarily for the purpose of leading the listener to enter, and therefore the benefits are primarily explained first. The explanation of the first chapter is complete.
