In order to accomplish (samadhi), to abandon regret, just as the ritual of properly taking vows as described in the second chapter, by properly taking vows, one will not have the regret of "whether the vows have been well protected." In order to protect the vows as described in the methods of protecting vows in the third and fourth chapters, one will not have the regret of "whether one has confessed well." Even if one occasionally breaks vows, just as the method of purifying sins described in the second chapter, and each and every transgression in the third chapter, purification, etc., in order to purify sins, one will not have the regret of "whether one has confessed well the transgressions committed." Abandoning harmful thoughts has already been discussed in the fifth chapter. Abandoning doubt will be taught in the eighth chapter, so it is not discussed here. Now, from the perspective of showing the faults of not abandoning the obscurations of meditation, in order to abandon the two obscurations, abandon the five obscurations of meditation, and in order to instruct that the mind should be placed in equanimity, therefore, "Prince" and so on are mentioned. The naming of the treatise is as before. It is called "The Teaching on Meditation," the explanation of the seventh chapter is complete. Now, in order for the person who has placed the mind in equanimity to attain a special state, the eighth chapter is taught in order to generate wisdom. So, relying on what should it be generated? In the chapter on meditation, where does the collection of tranquility abide? These tranquilities, one should practice tranquility itself, all of this is assembled for what purpose? It is assembled for the purpose of generating wisdom in one's own and others' continuums. In the chapter "The Teaching on Meditation," it says: "With the superior insight that is complete with tranquility, Knowing that it can destroy all afflictions, First one should seek tranquility." Therefore, for those who desire nirvana and happiness in their own and others' continuums, in order to attain it, one should generate wisdom, that is the meaning. Among them, nirvana refers to self-benefit. Happiness refers to the benefit of others. Or, nirvana refers to abandonment. Happiness refers to wisdom. Nirvana refers to definitive good. Happiness refers to

Is prominent. Like this, a person with meditative concentration, thinking about what kind of wisdom should be generated in order to attain cessation and bliss, said, "The ultimate truth and..." etc. This shows that the wisdom that focuses on the two truths should be generated. Saying "explained" etc., means that the Tathagata etc. said it, which is the remainder of the sentence. Thinking about what their respective characteristics are like, he said, "The ultimate truth..." etc. "The ultimate is not the object of mind," etc. The word "mind" is just an example, and it should also be known that it is not the object of sound. As it says in the sutra, "The ultimate truth is a place where even the mind cannot reach, so what need is there to mention letters?" It also says, "Son of the gods, in the ultimate, the ultimate truth is completely beyond all expressions, because it is unborn and unceasing, free from speech and knowledge, and free from what is to be known." Therefore, if one thinks, how is the ultimate truth not the object of mind? The ultimate truth is wisdom that exists as it is, but if one examines it with wisdom, then no thing can be established. As it says in the sutra, "If one distinguishes with the mind, then there is no independence and no examination." The noble Nagarjuna also said, "Whatever is said, one should know that its nature is emptiness. Emptiness is also emptiness. Like this, there is nothing that is not empty." In the two truths, it also says, "Therefore, it is not empty." etc. In any case, it cannot be established, therefore, if one examines it with wisdom, how can mind and sound be its object? Or, the ultimate truth is just the cessation of the proliferation of superimpositions on the nature of other-dependence. Therefore, mind and sound can in no way be its object, because it is merely a negation, so it is nothing. In contrast to this, "Mind and sound are conventional," etc. This is showing the two truths of the noble ones, as the son of the gods said, "If the ultimate truth, in the ultimate, becomes the nature of the object of body, speech, and mind, then it does not belong to the category of the ultimate truth, it is merely the conventional truth.
