DTG105 0003.A Difficult Commentary on the Explanation of Engaging in the Bodhisattva's Conduct..g2.0f

It is said that it is not supreme. If the root of virtue arising from generosity is great, then do not abandon it. This is the meaning of saying not to discard it. Even if it is inferior, when the root of virtue arising from generosity becomes great, even the superior, smaller precepts should be set aside. That is the meaning. Thus, when there is no change in size, it should be understood that the inferior is to be taken as the main thing. So, in what way are the two sizes established? It is said, "mainly" and so on. Because the matter of benefiting others is great, in order to show that one should strive for this, it is said, "Thus understood" and so on. Thus, because benefiting others is the main thing, it is said, "Having compassion" and so on. When one is engaged in the precepts of discipline, taking the abandonment of faults as the main thing, the Blessed One, in the Vinaya of the Hearers, seeing that things are easy, things are few, and actions are few, even the extra robes and so on should not be cut. These prohibitions were also allowed to the Bodhisattva who benefits others because the Tathagata, who has compassion, saw that the long-term benefit would become benefiting others. As it is said in the Sutra, even if one obtains a heap of wealth as large as Mount Sumeru, one can accept it. Again, taking the naturally negative as the main thing, considering that easy things are the benefits of this life, the Vinaya of the Hearers prohibits killing beings who have become objects of salvation. Also, because it is seen that the long-term benefit is to eliminate the suffering of the three lower realms in the next life and protect them, it is allowed to the Bodhisattva who takes benefiting others as the main thing. As it is said in the Holy Cloud of Jewels Sutra, it is allowed not to hide people who commit the five inexpiable sins. Now, in order to show the accumulation of virtuous dharmas and the benefit of sentient beings, these root words of permission are also prohibited to those, corresponding in order. When one sees that things are easy, for the benefit of each beggar, giving clothes to those who want clothes, food to those who want food, etc., because one sees that it will become the long-term benefit of many others, therefore, for the benefit of many others as the main thing.

If a Bodhisattva is obstructed, just as the noble Ugraparipṛcchā asked, a Bodhisattva, having gone forth, should not give away the three Dharma robes in any way. Then, why is the giving away of the body, etc., to beggars prohibited? Because it is the support of pure conduct; if it is given away, the benefit of all sentient beings will be harmed, so it should not be given away for the benefit of some beggars. As it is said in "The Holy Dharma," etc., the body is only a symbol, and the resources that are the basis for practicing the Dharma should be regarded in the same way. As it is said in the Compendium of Trainings, it is just as it is said that giving is prohibited in order to protect the resources of this life. If one wonders what benefit there is in doing so, as it is said in "If one does so," etc., it is thought that by relying on these, one will gradually attain Buddhahood through the completion of the accumulations. Then, does one not give away everything? As it is said in "The thought of compassion," etc., the final phrase is "until the superior intention reaches the state of purity." Either because one is not accustomed to giving and cannot give, or even if one is able to give, regret and laziness arise because suffering such as illness arises from the power of past sinful actions, or because one has not attained the samādhi of going happily in all dharmas, so a feeling of happiness does not arise at that time, or a thought of wanting to do good in the future does not arise, or because the power of truth has not been established, it is feared that it will become an obstacle to life and pure conduct. Thinking this, for those whose superior intention has reached the state of purity, in order to avoid the aforementioned faults, only giving is actually done, that is its meaning. If that is the case, does one not give away anything at all? If that is the case, it would contradict the vow, wouldn't it? As it is said in "In any case," etc., for the great purpose of this life, for the sake of accomplishing the benefit of sentient beings, this very body is given to sentient beings in the manner of a slave, and as previously stated, the eleven precepts of benefiting sentient beings are practiced.

It is like that. Similarly, in future lives, whatever roots of virtue are created in the streams of oneself and others are created for the benefit of all sentient beings. One dedicates oneself as a servant to all sentient beings. Similarly, in order to attain great enlightenment, one should also dedicate oneself in body, speech, and mind to all sentient beings at all times, as described in the second chapter. Now, in order to briefly show the object of what should be learned, it is said, "oneself or others," etc. As for oneself, it is to be restrained by vows and the accumulation of good dharmas; as for others, it is to be restrained by accomplishing the benefit of sentient beings. Or, in whatever situation of conduct, whatever is done by body, speech, and mind, one should learn what and how to learn as it is said. As it is said in the sutras: "A Bodhisattva should not learn many dharmas, but should learn great compassion." It is also said: "A Bodhisattva should strive to make sentient beings happy as soon as they see him." It is also said: "A Bodhisattva should only guard his own mind." In all conduct, one should learn as it is said from the realm of completely pure conduct. Then, how should one learn which of the five sciences at that time?
