Therefore, if one cannot, it is established as without transgression; if one can, then not doing it becomes a transgression. This is just an example. When a Bodhisattva's precepts cannot be kept in certain situations, one should protect the main one and secretly proceed by placing the other in equanimity, this is what is being shown. So, when the precepts become similar and cannot be practiced simultaneously, how should they be practiced? To show that the one that was started first should be practiced, and the other, even if placed in equanimity, will not become a transgression, therefore it is said, "Thinking of what," and so on. Because at that time, the latter will not interrupt the former, so the former will also become well grasped. Because the remaining part of the former is not left out, the latter can also be thoroughly completed. Both will become one that is well grasped. If it is not like that, then because the latter will interrupt the former, and because there is a remaining part of the former, neither the former nor the latter will become well grasped. Because without grasping the former, one does not know that the latter should not be done. The near afflictions of non-reasoned attention will also increase. If it is not like that, it will not increase. Having shown it in general like that, now, in order to specifically explain how to train in the discipline of the three vows, it is said, "Jesting words," and so on. Among them, the first verse is in terms of abandoning natural transgressions, because jesting words and so on are natural transgressions. Therefore, its meaning is that as soon as one becomes aware of entering into them, one should immediately abandon them. With one verse such as "Digging the ground without meaning" and so on, it shows the abandonment of prohibited transgressions, because digging the ground and so on are prohibited transgressions. However, among the transgressions of nature and prohibition, why are only these mentioned? Because actions such as killing and drinking intoxicants are said to be a common basis for both householders and renunciates in the Hearer's Vinaya. And those mentioned above are spoken to renunciates, not to householders. And here, those Bodhi

Therefore, just as a renunciate Bodhisattva should protect, so too should a lay Bodhisattva. The so-called "Sugata's training" is, as stated in the sutras, whatever is not beneficial to sentient beings should be abandoned. Having explained how to protect the Pratimoksha vows that are common with the Shravakas, now, with regard to the uncommon Pratimoksha vows that prevent the non-virtuous deeds of the mind, six verses beginning with "When one wishes to act" are explained. How are praising oneself and denigrating others contradictory to the Pratimoksha vows? Praising oneself arises from being particularly attached to one's own body and possessions, while denigrating others arises from jealousy and miserliness. Therefore, these are non-virtuous deeds of the mind. To teach how to train in the precepts of accumulating non-virtuous dharmas, two verses beginning with "Intolerance" are taught. How are these contradictory to accumulating virtuous dharmas? Accumulating virtuous dharmas is summarized by the six perfections. Here, intolerance is the opposite of patience; laziness is the opposite of diligence; fear of profound meaning is the opposite of wisdom; acting rudely and speaking nonsense are the opposite of meditation; and being particularly attached to one's own body, possessions, and relatives is the opposite of generosity. So, what are the opposites of ethics? These explanations themselves are, and there is nothing else apart from these, because ethics are summarized by the three vows. Among them, "jesting speech" and so on are with regard to the Pratimoksha vows; "utmost certainty" and so on are with regard to accomplishing the benefit of sentient beings; "intolerance" and so on are with regard to accumulating virtuous dharmas, and there are no other ethics apart from these. Now, with regard to accomplishing the benefit of sentient beings.
